Ok, I'll kinda analyze the steps it took to take this photo.
Make: Canon
Model: Canon EOS 30D
Shutter Speed: 1/100 second (this is my shutter speed, I put the camera into TV which is Shutter priority and set the speed to 100)
F Number: F/5.0 (this value determined the amount of light that the lens let into the camera... this was determined by the camera's light meter)
Focal Length: 40 mm (lens focal length... nothing really special here)
ISO Speed: 3200 (this is more or less, the most important thing for low light photography... the higher the ISO, the more sensitive the camera is to light... Now, with higher ISOs comes more noise or grain... The best feature a camera can have to reduce noise is a CMOS or "combined metal oxide sensor" image sensor. Canons use this style senor on all of their new SLR cameras... I work at best buy and if you're looking to really improve your abilities look at the Canon XT... it's 799 but we do price match and have 2 years no interest (at certain stores).... No we don't work on commission but a good camera can really help you capture everything as you see fit.

definitely much more interesting than the standard birthday snap.
i like how you chose to show only the essentials, the cake and the birthday girl., the former which provides the light source, the candles appear to be glowing.
overall, the pic is highly contrasting, which is great for this kind of subject matter.
