"Think of it in terms of human limbs. If you were to dismember the arm or leg of a human, it would lose its source of blood and then wither and die.Equally, a dismembered limb from a monster would lose its source of magic and crumble to dust. This process is more serious for monsters as these often disintegrate within seconds, leaving no chance for reattachment."
