Just as every Doctor has a companion, every companion has friends and family that disapprove of said companion gallivanting through space and time with a stranger. (At least during the Tennant era, which if you haven't worked out already is the where I'm taking inspiration from).
Granted Toriel already fits into this category, but I really liked the idea of MK being the "childhood best friend" character to Frisk.

While his redesign isn't based on existing Who characters like the others so far have been, I will admit, I kinda had Mickey Smith in mind when deciding MK's role, hence "The Tin Dog" (The name Mickey essentially called himself when he realised his role in the group equated to that of K-9's).
