Guess which one of these guys took me longer to make. Go on, guess. The answer may surprise youBlue Jay- Billionaire industrialist Jason Campbell loves only two things: superheroes and blue jays. Developing an obsession with the bird in his childhood, he extended his love to costumed vigilantes when his father told him about one who operated in the 1940s named the Blue Jay. After making his fortune and being kicked out of most billionaire clubs for a generally obnoxious attitude, Jason turned his time and immense resources to creating and perfecting his own super-suit. Sadly, Jason seemed to miss the point of his idol, as he only engaged in heroic activities to alleviate boredom or test out new features he added to his costume. It was during one of these excursions that he teamed up with Ray Girl , who was shocked and appalled by his callow disregard for...just about everything! Failing to spur him into a more altruistic persona with the emphasis on selfless do-gooding and moral right alone, she instead played to his vanity. Convincing him a more active superhero career would offer a greater thrill than how he had been operating thus far, Jason took to the life with gusto. He was even the first one to suggest to Ray Girl the formation of a team, which would eventually lead to the creation of the Fantastic Avenging Justice Men Friends!
The (Green) Anvil- Nathan Emca's father was the infamous Red Hammer, one of the first government-sponsored superheroes. Seen by the masses as an unbreakable Adonis, he was in reality an arrogant and narcissistic show-boater. When public opinion began to turn against heroes, Red Hammer was the first to go, being publicly abused and humiliated by his arch-nemesis. Abandoned by his sponsors, he became vulnerable on every level, leaving him open to a myriad of lawsuits. This included a paternity suit which placed Nathan in his care. Nathan grew up with constant reminders that he was the son of a great hero. However, only inheriting his father's invulnerability and not his super strength left him with feelings of inadequacy. At first ecstatic to go live with the dad he never knew, he was crushed to learn of the Red Hammer's true nature, made worse by a descent into alcoholism. Nathan did his best to persevere though, even in the face of frequent beatings from his father's enhanced fists. Not even super strength could physically harm Nathan, but emotionally he became scarred and jaded. After running away from home and becoming one of the city's homeless youth, Nathan witnessed Ray Girl and her team of misfits on their first mission. Seeing them in action restored Nathan's faith in heroes and instilled in him a belief that anyone could be a hero, so he happily answered a recruitment drive put out by the team soon after.
I first began developing this universe a long time ago, and my original plan was to incorporate other works such as the Incredibles and Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog into the mix. Obviously that's not the case anymore, but in the original model, Anvil was the son of Captain Hammer, and I wanted his costume to still reflect that, so there'll be a slight similarity.
Let me know what you think! I'd be happy to answer any questions.
