Description
Well, despite the fact that Heatmieser decided to fart on Tennessee and give us fucking rain instead of snow on Xmas, I decided to do a lovely snowy image of Jonathan as a Holiday gift. After all, Red Dragons look good in the snow. This was done partially in Vue 7 Infinite (free demo version) and Photoshop CS3 and 20 hours of work. Mostly because I couldn't get the background to look right.
So, happy holidays.

Hm well for the colors I took a color reference, meaning I used the colors from another pic (a pic from todd lockwood))
I have no real technic to how I make the scales but I learned that it's useful to use a lighter color on dark colors and a dark color on light colors when drawing the lineart of the scales. (sorry my english lacks.)
I also noticed it looks more vivid when u draw some 'imperfect' scales among the other ones so it doesn't look too static.Means that they differe in size etc. Erm what else...
Sometimes I drew the scales first and colored them later and somtimes I'd put the color first and draw the oulines on top, I don't know yet which is better or easier to do. :S
As you can see the scales on the wing arm look rather unconvincing, I'd love if they looked like the ones u drew on ur dragon's body. I tried to 'copy' todd lockwood's technic there but it just doesn't work for me. Hope this answers ur question.

I use a brush specially designed from foil wrapping paper for my dragon's scales. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes, I get comments that the body doesn't look as detailed (when I use the brush) as the neck, which I draw in manually. Sometimes, it makes the image look flat. After that, I just select the scales and hide the selection, create a new layer and airbrush in a lighter color, then set that to screen and then lightly use color dodge tool to make it shiny. And that's it.
However, I'd love to mimic Todd Lockwood's technique.
Can you show me some process stills of you working on that image or the original line art? I'm trying to make my dragons look more detailed.

Well I don't have any older versions of it anymore, but given I continue working on it I can try to take some shots and show them to you later.
The lineart wasn't made by me but by a friend of mine, you can find it here [link]
Actually on the lil WIP of mine to the left you can see how I am drawing the scales an how I take the bluish color to draw the lines onto the purple color and vice versa, if that helps u any, other than that let me know what u want to know in particular and I'll see what I can do for u.

Love to see those shots. Hope you continue working.
I hope what I said on how I made my scales was helpful. I use a lot of texture brushes in my art to "cut corners" sometimes it works. Sometimes it don't. Guess this time it did.

To me he kinda looks overly skinny but I believe that is how D&D dragons are supposed to look. Now on to the parts I like best. The background is simply yet gives the feeling of eternal depth. The forground being slightly blured gives depth and focus to the picture as a whole (and the trees are well dran no less). The contrast of the grey, dark blue, and white to John's glowing red eyes and vibrant scales is pretty amazing (though I feel a tad more shadows and a stronger eye glow would be better). The wings are very detailed the shadeing on the inside is amazing and the subtle glow from the moon near the top is down right amazing.
I likes how you draw snow

He does look pretty good in the snow *^.^*
In fact, I can imagine Susan standing somewhere offscreen, a smug expression on her face and exclaiming "Yeah, that's MY husband"
Although I do have to admit taht the picture makes me kind of shiver too... Not much of a fan of the cold ;
Though I do suppose that Johnny, being a red dragon and all, is being warmed by his fire-magic or something like that.
I love the details, by the way. The glowing eyes are really cool and kind of intimidating and... Is that a smile that I see on his reptilian face?

Ghostwalker2061 In reply to Sek-Raktaa [2009-12-28 00:04:31 +0000 UTC]
Well, cold being produced by weather isn't much of a problem for Jonathan. He can withstand it. However, cold attacks like that used from a White Dragon or a Silver Dragon can harm him or even kill him.
But his elemental fire inside of him keeps him warm.
He's not smiling. That's how a Red Dragon's mouth is shaped. You've seen how he smiles though.

Dungeons and Dragons. The most famous RPG game out there. And the iconic Red Dragon, the image I like to draw a lot, is the main bad-ass of the game. Red Dragons are a race of dragons, who are arrogant, powerful, chaotic evil which means they never say they're sorry, and shoot napalm from their mouths. And if you don't know what napalm is, I suggest to look up weapons of the Vietnam War.

It's a big table-top, dice-based RPG game in US, in France, in Spain, and other countries. It's been around since 1974 designed by the late Gary Gygax. He died in 2008. There's been video games based off of it, two really bad movies based off of it. Millions of books written in many languages, including Spanish, English, French, German. I supposed it skipped Switzerland and went to Russia instead because I've seen a few Russian copies out there. It became an influence for other games like Heroes, Vampire the Masquerade, Call of Cthulhu, as well as Warhammer and Warhammer 40K, the list goes on. And many of our now modern video games has some reference to Dungeons and Dragons in it, even subtle hints to it. Pretty much of our modern fantasy and sci-fi is based off of Dungeons and Dragons or the Hobbit in some form or another.

I mean, I live in a small town, but there's at least 100 of us geeks playing D&D. I got into it in the very early 90s and that was back when people still thought D&D was evil. And it sparked up a HUGE controversy over it for almost 2 decades. Now, it's a widely accepted phenomenon.
And if you don't know what D&D is by now, it's essential that you should because that's what's crossed over in my Jake Long story. Most of my dragon art is based off of monsters from the D&D Monster Manual especially the dragons.
