Description Well, there we go, he's colored.  And yes, again, I just can't see him any other way.  I'm not saying the new design is inferior to the one I grew up on, but, this was the Smaug I grew up with.  So, I'm just gonna keep seeing him as a big dragon with a warg head.  And the headlight eyes.  Yup.

And yes, Smauglock fangirls, I've been drawing Smaug with hair on his head BEFORE it was considered cool.

There were two films before Jackson got a hold of it.  One was made in 1966, and is considered the very first of the Hobbit adaptation films.  The second came in 1977 by Rankin Bass.

And to date, the Rankin Bass film is actually the most accurate, however, it did not go off the Appendices from the Lord of the Rings.  So, nothing about the Necromancer or why the hell Gandalf would just disappear while they were walking towards the mountain.

And it was a bit rushed.  However, the style in which Rankin Bass's film was made is in fact the same style they used for the Last Unicorn, another deep favorite of mine as well.

Before Jackson decided to take on the Hobbit himself, I believe it was mentioned that he wasn't going to do the movie at all.  And the reason why he wasn't going to do the Hobbit was because he felt Rankin Bass's film told the story very well and that he felt there was no need for him to take it on since Rankin Bass did make a very nicely done film which stayed very faithful to the source material, despite cutting some bits from the book because of time and content issues.

I'll look into it, if it's better than The Lord of the Rings cartoon.

I think Peter Jackson is doing well with The Hobbit so far. I was always a little annoyed with The Lord of the Rings, mainly because it changed so much and left out so much important details from the story, but also partly because I still enjoyed the films when I wasn't suppose to :L The Hobbit seems to be a lot more faithful though. Honestly I'm not sure if a 70s cartoon would be worth my time at this point.

Also I'm not sure where you heard that because the reason Peter Jackson didn't do The Hobbit first was because he could not get adaptation rights. It took him 15 years to get the rights, but The Lord of the Rings it only took a short while, so that's why The Hobbit is only just happening now 10 years after The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

That was the other issue. Guess who owned them.  Rankin Bass who was also owned by Warner Bros.

Smuaglock? That could be either the best idea or the worst.

When you go onto Tumblr, type in Smauglock.  It's a meme in which these fangirls, mostly the yaoi type, would draw Smaug with a blue scarf and a scruff of hair on his head all because Benedict Cumberbatch is Smaug's actor in the movie.  And especially if you see images with Smaug and Bilbo as Sherlock Holmes and Watson.  All because Cumberbatch plays Sherlock, and Martin Freeman, who plays Bilbo, also played Watson, Sherlock's assistant.

And often these yaoi fangirls would have Bilbo and Smaug...um....well...does go backdoor humping ring any bells?

Aww, I was hoping it would be Smaug in a purple scarf and Bilbo solving mysteries.
