Well, there we go, he's colored. And yes, again, I just can't see him any other way. I'm not saying the new design is inferior to the one I grew up on, but, this was the Smaug I grew up with. So, I'm just gonna keep seeing him as a big dragon with a warg head. And the headlight eyes. Yup.
And yes, Smauglock fangirls, I've been drawing Smaug with hair on his head BEFORE it was considered cool.

Also that design is based off of Rankin Bass The Hobbit which was aired in 1977 on cable TV.

Yeah, when you start quoting lines, you are basically thinking I have no idea what they were. When actuality, I know the chapter Inside Information by heart. Which I stated in another comment to another person on this site.

I like it when people comment on the image, not quote lines of the book. I usually quote lines in the book in the description of the image itself so that no one has to.

Smaug with hair is pretty cool anyway!
I love the lighting in this. My eyes went right to the shimmer on his throat. It's just so lovely. I love the little details of his scales, too and the highlights on his hair. The smoke coming off his nostrils is awesome. Gives the image a hazy feel. It's almost like one of those classical paintings Atreyu saw on the wall in The Neverending Story.
I don't know whether I want to pet Smaug or run like hell. Nice job on this!

I loved Smaug from the 70's cartoon, along with the rest of it. Maybe the second movie will make up for the failings of the first one, but I'm not to certain.

Very cool. I like that it has hints of the Smaug design that was in the old cartoon. Just has those hints like the whiskers and stuff. But it is still in your amazing design style though. Great work!

I had never watched the old hobbit movie though I had heard of it, and after I saw that image of smaug in your journal it piqued my interest to I mentioned it at the dinner table in which my stepmom said 'oh I have that movie it's the best!' and so the next day we watched it and I say I rather liked it a lot, wish I had seen it when I was a kid though since its so good.

I think I can see a little bit of every depiction of Smaug in this. There's some of Mr. Howe's work, the Rankin/Bass version, maybe a little of Peter Jackson's too. I am loving what I see here.

I grew up reading The Hobbit, but I never heard of any film of it before the Peter Jackson trilogy. I think it might have been because my grandma bought me that terrible The Lord of the Rings cartoon when I was a kid and I hated it so much that she just got me the Silmarillion instead of subjecting me to The Hobbit cartoon
