Description Book cover assignment for my Ad Graph class and I cannot tell in words how badly I've wanted to use the Hobbit for an art assignment that wasn't on my own time. This is also my first real go at digital painting, it's a little rough in places and the stairs are a tad wonky but I'm not gonna dwell on that. Go ahead and critique this as I need to improve with digital.

This is a really great piece!! Huge Tolkien fan and can't wait to see Β (and hear) Smaug in the movie

Is that supposed to be fire in front of his chest? I don't recall him starting fires on top of the jewels in the book, just up and out towards Bilbo/the dwarves.

I also noticed that the plates on his underside are exposed behind the fire, though in the books he's described as his entire underside being encrusted in jewels, with the exception of a small patch under his left forearm. Were you looking to go for a more natural feel here?

Just a few things I noticed, but an overall excellent work nonetheless.

I'm gonna be honest, I haven't read the entire book yet (due to time reasons) so a few things were exaggerated here and there. I just thought the fire would make for a more interesting light source. Probably wasn't the best idea putting on top of the gold.

But, thanks for the appreciation!

seriously awesome job, especially for your first try at digital painting! Β

As for critique the only suggestions I can see are to work on shading more and don't be afraid to experiment with the different tools. Β I don't even know how it's done but I've seen a lot of other work with super realistic looking fire (just for an example).

But regardless, very nice job. Β

Thanks! I will see where I can find some different textures so when I do fire in the future it'll look more loose.

Thanks!

It's not the first time I touched digital, but it is the first real project I've done with it. I haven't gotten into the fancy brushes and textures yet though.

Thanks! I had played with digital before but it was before I got a tablet...I was doing it all by mouse. Oh god that was a nightmare.

NP, and I know how ya feel. Β I use to do everything just on the little finger-pad of a laptop... when I got my tablet, it was like, "How did I ever do this before?".

I was recently told that using harder brushes when blending colours gives the piece more appeal. I've tried it and the advice seems true.

Nonetheless, this piece is gorgeous and definitely has a strong "Tolkien" feel to it.

Yeah, I used harder brushes towards the end when I was filling in the Erebor background. It seemed to make it looks thicker and smoother. I'll look into that next time as I'm just stepping into digital painting. Thanks though!
