I had been wanting to make a more serious Smaug piece for quite some time but never got around to it or got something I was really satisfied with. And I didn't just want to replicate a still from one of the movies or picture on the internet because in my opinion that cheapens the credibility of the artist (and the art itself). Well after sketching this dragon in several different poses I ended up with this.I fought through an annoying cold making this uucckkk but it was worth it so I can make prints of it now.

Epic work!
This is the BEST Smaug artwork I've ever seen. It accurately shows my favorite dragon in his entirety (and I like this rendition of Smaug, both body shape and size, a lot!)

Gorgeous. Simply breathtaking.Β
The lighting in his chest and mouth is done quite well. It really lends that glow feel. The background is superb. Not too detailed, so it doesn't distract or detract from Smaug. But it's also beautiful and breathtaking in its own simple way. Giving the wyvern a solid setting.Β
All the little detail work on his belly scales and spikes are impressive. and your shading technique really gives the dragon some depth. It really is a beautiful piece, all the textures make it feel akin to a traditional painting.Β
My only critique would be that his wings feel lacking. Their angle is off, and their shading is doesn't quite fit. I fell like the wing on the right side could have used some deeper contrast and more shading. The highlights make it seem like the wing is reflecting some of the light from Smaug's mouth, but given the angle and that the wing is farther away it could have used some darker shadows. As it is, the wing feels very stagnant, flat. The arms in the wings are also very thin, almost skeletal. His arms should be muscular because they have to lift the entire weight of the dragon. Powerful looking instead of frail.Β
But aside from the wings I simply love the piece. You are a talented artist and this is once again, gorgeous.Β
Smaug is by far my favorite big screen Wyvern.Β
