"I didn't think that we'd get so far
I never thought that you had it in you
Now we both got our battle scars
Now we both got our new point of views
And now I see you've become
A bitter heart with no one
To come home to
(Sorry, I'm not sorry
No, no)
We were young and stupid
We thought that we might get through it
Now you want an apology
Now you want an apology
It took two to make it
It took one of us to break it
Now you want an apology
Now you want an apology"
The story of Wolfpelt and Butterflywing is one of the sad ones, told by elders to young warriors in love to remind them that true love does not always come easy.
Two young warriors, Wolfpelt and Butterflywing had grown up with one another since they were young kits, only one or two moons apart in age. They had been young playmates, often forced together by their mothers when they wanted to chat or gossip for a few. At first, the two of them did not get along. Wolfkit would grab at Butterflykit's ears and tug on them hard, and Butterflykit would put worms in the tom's nest as retaliation. It was clear to the den queens that the two kits were not friends, but they always laughed it off if Butterflykit ever refused to hang out with the tom saying: "That's just how tom's are, sweetheart."
As apprentices, these childish arguments and games continued, if not more. At one point, Wolfpaw shoved Butterflypaw's head into the mud, and when she complained, the adults brushed it off and said "He probably just likes you".
Butterflypaw and Wolfpaw's banter was a constant in the apprentices den, their arguing a source of constant noise. One night, the apprentices dragged them out of the den and brought them outside of camp, blocking the entrance back and saying that if they didn't settle their hatred of the other, then they woudln't be allowed back into the apprentices den.
This was the first time that the two of them had really a chance to cut through all the arguing and bullshit to sit down and have a real conversation with one another. From there, things began to change. They spent more time together, the banter turned playful and fun and they were never seen without the other. Most cats were surprised that the two apprentices were no longer at eachother's throats.
Love blossomed between the two of them, young and new. When they became warriors, was when they started to be open about their feelings. Butterflywing was the most touchy of the two of them, leaning on Wolfpelt and being openly affectionate, while Wolfpelt appeared to be more withdrawn within their relationship. The warriors jumped from courting to mateship in the span of only one moon. They were rushing into it, which they were warned by many cats around them. They were still young. They still had room to grow.
Butterflywing brushed it off, but things began to change when she brought up the idea of kits to her mate.
That was when things changed.
Wolfpelt became more withdrawn, and spent time with his clanmates rather than Butterflywing. He especially spent time with another warrior, Appleheart. Butterflywing was beginning to grow suspicious and jealous about her mate, and this resulted in their relationship being ripped to the ground once more. Arguments started seemingly out of nowhere, usually instigated by Butterflywing herself. Her pushing and pushing, convinced that Wolfpelt was cheating on her with Appleheart, is what drove him away in the end.
Wolfpelt broke things off with Butterflywing, telling her that he loved her but he could no longer be with a she-cat who did not trust him.
She became bitter and lonely, lashing out at other cats. While he and Appleheart became closer, and then mates. He was happier.
And she hates it.
"Now that I see you've become a bitter heart with no one to hold on to -- No one besides yourself.
How could you say it's my fault?"
Quicknibble became the medicine cat during a great winter. The cold took many clanmates from their claws, and they were blamed a lot for the loss of clanmates. The young medicine cat knew that there was not much that they could do to help their clanmates, but there was still this innate urge to help. They didn't want to watch their clanmates suffer at their paws, because there was nothing that they could do.
This leaf-bare was unlike anything that the clan had seen before. It lasted well into the moons of when Newleaf was supposed to warm the lands. Seeking insght, Quicknibble turned to Starclan for answers.
But Starclan had none for them.
They informed the medicine cat was that this was out of their paws, and there was nothing that could be done to save the cats that would perish this leafbare. Quicknibble was appalled, how dare Starclan deny the lives of their clanmates? Even their former mentor, who had passed due to greenleaf, had told the medicine cat:
"You can't save everyone, Quicknibble."
They would, and he would show that Starclan was wrong.
Moons passed, and Quicknibble tried every herb, every tactic that they could to bring their clanmates back to healthiness. They seeked out new herbs, testing them on willing patients in order to figure out what they did and how they could help. Eventually ,Quicknibble was approached in their dreams: in a place as dark and voidless. No stars, and trees reaching into the sky endlessly.
The place of no stars.
They were approached by a frosty tom who called himself Snowfang. He offered his aid to the medicine cat, to know what would aid their clanmates in this time: for a cost. This dark forest cat demanded that in return for his knowledge and aid, that he would be able to use Quicknibbles body to exact revenge on the cat who had caused all their misery and put them in the Place of No Stars.
Quicknibble had no other choice, if They wanted to save his clanmates, and prove Starclan wrong.
And so they signed a deal with the devil.
Cat's now see there's something wrong with the young mediicne cat, in which sometimes they are quiet and sociable as they usually are, and others where they are angry and petty. There seems to be a dark glint in the medicine cat's eye, something resting behind their normally impassive gaze.
But Quicknibble had found the cure to the winter sickness, and now it was their turn to honor their end of the bargain.
