One of sixteen illustrations for an epic narrative poem entitled Red Snow, depicting the same character I created in Shield Maiden and the battle scene Red Snow .

I knew that I wanted to do a close-up from the back of a central character in the story (to view the aftermath of the battle), and then, having penciled in most of the details of the composition, I realized that she was wearing chain-mail in the other shots...

Now, drawing chain-mail up close was not really what I had in mind, but here I was. I do know what real chain-mail looks like.
This is not it. Consider this a half-breed fantasy version, 'cause there was no way I was going to interlock every link.

60+ hours went into this one, which caused me to reflect on the words of Boromir in the movie The Fellowship of the Ring, where he states:

"It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing. Such a little thing."

I've gone off rings for a while...

Thank you so much! I must admit, however, it threw me off chain-mail (at least close-ups) for the longest time, lol!

Thanks! Yep, this one took a while. Actually, twice as long as need be, because I work over a complete pencil drawing. Needless to say, I went off chain-mail for a while.

I know what chain-mail looks like I'm making some right now and this is... I'm running out of words to explain how awesome this is, great! fantastic! beautiful!

Do I know what real chainmaille looks like?..... Hmmmmmm Readers Digest version of the answer: Yes. You don't want the full and epic answer but it has to do with Oppi Untracht and several volumes on jewelry making and metalsmithing. (Must haves if you ever wish to test the strength of your coffee table.) Be glad you did not do 6 in 1. >_
Nice penmanship. I love the textures you've created.

How's the West Coast treating you?

Thanks so much for the fave! There was no way I was going to draw real chain mail, lol. My patience may be legendary, but not infinate! As for the West Coast, I'm not there yet, silly! I'll be moving in late July. But when I do, Ivar's is on the list of places to visit! The link you sent me was enough to whet the appetite.

Yonaka-Yamako In reply to giadrosich [2009-02-27 23:57:18 +0000 UTC]

And Osaka in Silverdale. When you see Bo and Aiko, tell them Hi from Kate, Cheerio, and Sarah.

Ivar's on the pier is a great place to enjoy and if you happen to enjoy beer, the microbreweries about the place deserve visits and looking into. Lord knows we loved Thomas Kemper (provided they still exist). We were more fond of their soft drinks especially their vanilla and honey creme ales. Sad but true, we're soda nuts.

If seafood and music is your thing, I can not recomment the area enough and for all the festivals that go on almost year round, it is one of the most likeable places to be.

I wish we never had to move as I really miss the place.

I'm humbled your patience and persistence to complete a piece like this and put the effort in to capture the detail! Even it doesn't look like real chain mail, nobody can blame you for that considering the effort you put in, on top of the fact that few would really know what it does actually look like!

giadrosich In reply to SudsySutherland [2008-02-28 18:28:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your visit and comments, Michael!

That was, indeed, one of the things that I had to consider doing the close up view, whether or not render realistic chain mail. I decided against it, opting for a more stylized "fantasy" construct, as was explained in the description. As you pointed out, not many people would realize the difference, and the fact that the finished illo was reproduced much smaller allowed me to save some much needed time on the deadline process, as this was one of sixteen images which was done for a 10 page poem!

Wow...again, you're killing me with the detail!! It's amazing!! I love the chain mail. You're making me want to finally stipple something again.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

bluechimeraz In reply to bluechimeraz [2007-11-08 20:38:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah but the great thing about stippling is it does look AWESOME when you're done, so that makes it worth it. I haven't drawn in so long -- the last pic I drew was in May, which I've only just posted. And that was my first drawing in 2 years. It's ridiculous. Looking at your stuff is making me want to stipple again because ink is so cool...but to get the creative juices flowing, I'm starting with something simple and just working on a portrait in pencil. It just takes a few hours and then I can prove to myself that I can still draw lol.

BTW, I admire your dedication...I think I would have gotten completely bored making the chain mail and set it aside...forever. lol

Chain mail! I think it turned into the "chain mail of doom!" Doom, I say! I would hate to think that I made someone turn to "the dark side," lol. I love stipple, but it takes so long...

Very nice. Amazing perspective, I like where the sword and ponytail meet. The chain mail and cape are the most beautiful parts of the picture though, just gorgeous.
