I used a dark cloth and made sure it's far enough not to reflect the studio flash

would you mind telling me what setup you used to get this shot and how you managed to get the clear black background?

use a flash and make sure it won't light the BG so you get pure black. I used 2 SB-800 on manual and just a tank full of water... took me about 50 shots to get it right.

I like how you get the feeling of movement from the slice because of the way the water is frozen around it, its not suspended, its definately sinking. The vivid Yellow gives the photo pop to, nice!
