Description Name: Estranthus
Aliases: The Devonian Demon, That Which Dwells in Ocean Shadows, The King of Deepest Darkness, Leviathan
Pronounced: (Ess-trann-thuss)
Faction: Rogue
Alignment: Neutral

Classification: Chordata / sp?
Length: 2,190 feet
Height: 570 feet at highest point of carapace (830+ feet at head height)
Weight: 2,185 tons

Weaponry / Abilities:

Quad Jaws / Shredder Tusks:
Estranthus’ jaws are the stuff of nightmares. Upper and lower jaws both split into paired “beaks” of dense bone and cartilage, his maw is unlike that of any other creature. His actual teeth – or more appropriately, tusks – are even more terrifying: set at opposing angles in each jaw, these spear-like tusks mesh together perfectly when the monster’s mouth closes, brutally snagging and impaling victims. Akin to the tentacle hooks of a colossal squid, each tusk is mounted on a cartilaginous swivel joint, letting them passively rotate in order to retain maximum grip on struggling victims. The jaws themselves are coated in microscopic dermal teeth, giving them a sandpaper-like texture that can rip flesh and grind through hide with ease.

Whorl-Tooth Proboscis:
From the rear of his seemingly throat-less mouth, Estranthus can extend a muscular tentacle-like proboscis tipped by three semicircular plates brimming with teeth. Reminiscent of the megatooth sawshark’s infamous tooth whorl, these three plates are used by the monster to process food, which is then ingested by his throat-like proboscis – just like a housefly. The proboscis is also an effective weapon, lurching out to spear and mulch enemy flesh.

Dual Hand’tacles:
Towering high above Estranthus is a pair of flexible tentacles, all six of them scalloped with cartilaginous plates. Lined on their undersides with innumerable spear-like hooks – many of which can swivel in their sockets – and incredibly muscular, these tendrils are potent grapplers that can snare, constrict, and crush even the toughest of targets into a featureless pulp. Estranthus uses his hand’tacles primarily for hunting and fighting, ensnaring small targets and holding larger ones in place for his fearsome jaws to savage.

Tankbuster Pincers:
Estranthus’ frontmost limbs each sport a bulky toothed pincer; collectively, his arms and their pincers are known as chelipeds. Serving both as walking limbs and as powerful manipulators, these appendages are his tools of choice for digging and killing. Depending on the situation, Estranthus can simply crush targets outright with his pincers, or he can take his time and use his pincers like monstrous bolt cutters, lopping off entire limbs. Alternatively, these massive limbs also make for formidable bludgeoning weapons.

Armored Propulsion / Kickstand Tail:
Estranthus’ tail is encased in segmented plates of chitinous armor, its tip terminating in two pairs of ragged tail flukes, or uropods. Flexible only in the vertical plane, his tail flexes up-and-down in great arcs to propel his immense bulk through the ocean depths, and if need be, it can also be used like a massive club, smashing his foes into the ground or sending them flying. Normally keeping his tail coiled up when on land, Estranthus may use this to his advantage in combat: when the moment is right, he will rapidly launch his tenta’clubs out from between his legs, driving their armored tips into his foes with bonecrushing force.

Tenta’clubs / Anal Beak:
The last division of Estranthus’ tail – his telson – is just plain freakish. As with crustaceans, his telson is where his anus is situated, but this is where all similarities end: rather than an exposed slot in his armor, Estranthus’ anus is guarded on all sides by four heavy nail-like spikes, which are themselves rooted to four elastic tentacles that can project from the monster’s telson. If this wasn’t enough, the anus itself is shielded with what could only be described as a beak…a perfectly moveable, squid-like beak. At maximum extension, these four “tenta’clubs” increase his tail length by over 200%, working together as a powerful flail-like ranged weapon that rips flesh, splinters bones, and cracks armor with brutal efficiency. Each tenta’club can move independently of the others, allowing Estranthus to seize targets and drag them within range.

Immovable Object:
Estranthus is for who the phrase “immovable object” was invented. Nearly twice the mass of the second-largest kaiju on record, his is immune to brute-force attacks and, with his extensive adaptations to a partly sessile lifestyle, is just plain impossible to move. His Cathedral Formation represents the epitome of his immovability, as the colossal kaiju can anchor twenty different points of his body deep into the ground, leaving only his armor exposed to the outside world.

In The Shadow Of The Colossus:
Estranthus is the largest living thing on post-Cycle Earth. Dwarfing even his fellow SGOs in his shadow, his physical strength is unrivaled by anyone or anything.

Invulnerable:
Estranthus is likely indestructible. Encased in thick interwoven layers of chitin, cartilage, and keratin, the Devonian Demon is rendered unassailable by physical, chemical, and ballistic weaponry. Even the kaiju’s joints are armored with internal rings of cartilage. Constant weathering has given his exoskeleton a rugged texture similar to that of shark skin; much like denticles would, this irregular texture provides Estranthus with both hydrodynamic benefits and physical defense. Additionally scattered throughout his exoskeleton are dense mineral deposits that passively augment his defenses.

Amphibious:
As his unique physiology would suggest, Estranthus is equally comfortable – and formidable – either on land or in the water, and despite his enormous bulk, the kaiju can switch between the two elements with surprising fluidity. Along each side of his head are five shark-like gills that allow the monster to remain submerged indefinitely.

Impeccable Vision:
Behind their soulless black exteriors, Estranthus’ compound eyes are incredible sensory organs. Split into three horizontal sections, each complete with its own independently mobile pupil, each eye is capable of trioncular vision, allowing Estranthus to triangulate the shape and depth of any object with a mere glance. Like those of a mantis shrimp, Estranthus’ eyes can also detect several different forms of polarized light, so he can easily see objects that would be invisible to most organisms; even the SGOC’s active-camouflage hull technology is useless against his prying gaze.

High-Pressure Mineralized Waterjet:
Thanks to a small pouch located within his throat, Estranthus can store a reservoir of water within his body and, if he prefers, supplement it with ingested minerals. This pouch is compressed by muscular contractions, pressurizing and heating up the stored water and mineral grit until it is expelled from the monster’s proboscis. Spraying water and abrasives at over 210,000 psi in a thin, almost laser-like stream, Estranthus can puncture and cut through almost any material.

Cathedral Formation:
Estranthus will withdraw into his armored carapace if threatened. Nicknamed the “Cathedral Formation” for its uncanny resemblance to a large Roman Catholic church, this form is impervious to damage but at the cost of total immobility. Withdrawing into his protective shell is neither a simple nor quick process for such a massive creature, and it usually takes Estranthus seven or so minutes to do so.

Weaknesses:

Slow:
Estranthus is painfully slow. Most other kaiju can run circles around him…not that they want to get in range of his deadly arsenal.

Water Dweller:
Estranthus has one true weakness: he cannot breathe air. To come onto land he must take an internal reservoir of water with him, and when that runs out he must head back to the sea.

Personality:
In the modern world, Estranthus is a stranger in a strange land. He is unaccustomed to the puny, frail creatures that inhabit it; even the plants are disappointingly tame and unwilling to bite him or siphon off his blue blood. His fellow kaiju are dwarfed by his size and strength, and few if any of them can pose him any real threat. If anything, he is bored with his immortality.

Estranthus is a true chimera, the ultimate conclusion of an organism’s long-term exposure to atom bogs. Exactly what he once was remains a mystery: some believe he’s a hybrid of chordate and arthropod, citing his hodgepodge of anatomical features; others that he’s the unlikely fusion of an Earth organism and a silicon-based organism delivered here via panspermia. No one can really say for sure.

Estranthus holds no ties to any force, nor does he uphold any ideology, which makes him all the more dangerous: he cannot be bought or persuaded, nor can he be frightened away. Everyone is a potential target to Estranthus. This indiscriminate nature makes him one of the deadliest creatures on the planet.

Combat Strategy:
In the strictest sense of the word, Estranthus cannot be “fought”. Whether on land or at sea, he is an unstoppable juggernaut that stops for nothing and for no one. Estranthus is a ferocious, vindictive combatant that will assault his enemies without remorse, using his size and strength to crush or dismember anything that dares to attack him. Defensively, Estranthus will bring in his tail and tenta’clubs to sweep away attackers, as well as stomp his massive feet and create shockwaves to throw back his enemies.

History:
Tissue samples taken from Estranthus’ carapace indicate that he is old. Very old. He may be the oldest kaiju known to man. It’s believed that Estranthus originated in the Devonian period and has been periodically waking up ever since, sometimes in synch with The Cycle, sometimes not. This degree of autonomy from The Cycle is unusual in kaiju and may indicate an as-of-yet undiscovered adaptation on Estranthus’ part. Worse yet, he may not be the only monster with this ability….

--------------------

On September 15th and 16th, 2007, a cascading series of events, now known in infamy as the “Big Bay Brawl”, occurred in Sydney, Australia, forever emblazoning the city in Earth’s SGO history.

For reasons unknown a number of kaiju suddenly turned up on Sydney’s doorstep and started having it out, ransacking the city. The kaiju were quickly set upon by the Royal Australian Navy, resulting in a brutal two-day free-for-all that caused billions of dollars in property damage and an invaluable loss of human life.

Unbeknownst to them all, the conflict had awakened something slumbering deep in the harbor. Something big….

--------------------

On the night of December 16th, 2007, all communications between Lord Howe Island and the Australian mainland were abruptly lost under unknown circumstances. While many mainlanders dismissed it as nothing more than a power outage, the governing bodies of New South Wales were decidedly more concerned for the island’s residents; the next day, several state maintenance crews had been tasked with restoring power to the island, and were soon transported via ferry towards the eastern coast of Lord Howe Island. What they found upon arrival was not an inhabited island, but a lifeless rocky derelict.

Lord Howe Island belonged to Estranthus now.

Artist's Commentary:
This is Estranthus, hands-down the largest kaiju in the entire Days Of Dikorus roster. Bringing this beast to life has proven to be a personal milestone in my artwork, as designing and illustrating him required more out of me than anything I had ever created before. Estranthus has been in the works so long I can’t even remember how I first devised him: I do remember that I wanted a kaiju for DOD that was ridiculously huge, monstrously over-the-top, virtually unstoppable, literally impossible to kill, and just intense. Needless to say, I think I've accomplished those goals.

Initially, Estranthus had a much “softer” design aesthetic, with smooth fish-like skin and plenty of fins adorning his body, but after more intensive research, I opted for rougher crab-like aesthetics instead. Estranthus’ anatomy went through a large number of revisions while I was designing him, as I was progressively molding his base species’ anatomies together into a fully functional and visually appealing design. His hand’tacles, for example, were at first rooted in his pincers and could be shot out like grappling hooks. Most notably, designing Estranthus to be Cathedral Formation-capable was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done in my artwork: it involved not only creativity, but patience, a good understanding of biomechanics, and a surprisingly large amount of geometry. Estranthus’ nightmarish jaws and toothed proboscis have been long-running features of his, and they’ve persevered practically unchanged throughout the design process.

In Estranthus’ design, I incorporated features from the following base species: coconut crabs, seahorses, pipefishes, Edestus, box crabs, lobsters, mantis shrimps, octopus, squid, Dunkleosteus, Anomalocaris, horseshoe crabs, turtles and tortoises, Opabinia, Helicoprion, modern-day sharks, houseflies, pistol shrimps, eels, anglerfish, and jellyfish…more or less in that descending order. Character-wise, I envisioned Estranthus as a fairly simple, animalistic monster that fights only for his survival.

On a final note, here are two fun facts: Estranthus is the only DOD kaiju that has two separate illustrations, bios, and Deviations; he also holds the record for “most time Gilarah93’s spent on a DOD kaiju illustration”, as he took me a total of two solid months to fully illustrate. Now that is true devotion, people.

Artistic Notes:
— Estranthus’ Cathedral Formation: gilarah93.deviantart.com/art/D… .
— Estranthus has a total of six limbs: two arms/pincers at the front, and four walking limbs behind them. In regards to their joints, the walking limbs vaguely resemble the letter “N”.
— Estranthus has a total of four tail paddles, or flukes. They are arranged in pairs.
— Estranthus’ upper and lower jaws don’t have any connective tissue between the bones; this gives his jaws their bizarre “U” shape. Because they’re still connected, the uppers move together, and the lowers move together.
— Estranthus’ proboscis is tipped with three toothed plates, with one above and two below; they are arranged sort of like the corners of a triangle, if that helps any.
— Estranthus’ teeth are arranged in alternation: his front upper teeth point outwards, and his front lower teeth point inwards; this pattern continues in alternation further down the jawline.
— Estranthus’ tail is split into nine segments, discounting the tail flukes at the very tip. Each segment sports a pair of short spike-like limbs on its underside; there are eighteen of these limbs in total.
— Estranthus’ walking feet vaguely resemble an “X” when seen from below; their “claws” are broad and somewhat shovel-shaped.
— Estranthus’ neck design is loosely based on the skeleton of a pipefish, and on the boom of a tower crane. See here: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia… , and www.krhicranes.com/blog/wp-con… .
— Estranthus’ exoskeleton is divided into three sections, which are indicated by raised ridges.

...I just thought of something.

What if Estranthus was originally a creature from Thule, or from a time period where organisms like what is now found only in Thule dominated the planet?

Don't worry about it too much; Estranthus probably won't make the cut for The Book, so his origins no longer concern me.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to let slip that, without Estranthus, Pensularah will likely be the biggest kaiju in DOD as of The Reboot. I did derive her name from the word "peninsula", after all.
