How do you prepare for grief? What guards you against it?

Grief creeps up your face, and you turn your head down to hide it. Grief is warm in your cheeks.

You would think that you have since accustomed yourself to the sight of motionless death. But when he died, you felt the noises in your ears go quieter; it is as if you had heard his life softly slipping away. As grief settles in, its companion soon makes it way through the barrens of your mind, in a chariot of fire: anger. You see red. Why should only the resilient be worthy of entrance to paradise? What good, you think to yourself, is bitter perseverance in paradise? What of the good souls, who had suffered and perished so that others may live? Do they not deserve paradise more than yourself by the tenfold?

Oordeel, god of judgement, is a cruel, fickle demon. You curse his injustice. You curse his games. But it is futile; no rage can bring him back.

Alas, it is grief which strikes you numb. Did he suffer? In his final moments, was he in pain? You finally find the answer to your own question: you cannot defend yourself against this deep mourning, this deep pain. All you can do is cage the urge to tear up, and realise miserably, as your eyes begin to spill, that you have failed that too.

Poor boy, you have been so tired for so long. Rest soon.
