I copied the background layer, then turned it to a custom B&W, then used the erasure splatter tools to bring out the natural colour underneath. I've done loads like this now. I'm going through a splatter phase

There are loads of brushes here on dA that fellow deviants have submitted for download in the stock/resource pages. & not too difficult to make some urself too

I'm a fan of the custom brushes lol, just it never occurs to me to use them for erasing, but its very effective

I've only really started to use them in that way myself recently. Splatter & sun rays are pretty good & most used so far

There's some really cool brushes out there, sadly for some reason my version of photoshop won't let mecreate new ones, gotta figure out how to bypass that lol

What version are you using? I'm on CS3, no problems for me, but i hear that Photoshop7 is really good for creating brushes. Far better than any of the latter versions. Apparently.

I've got cs5 but its a little glitchy, might try their cloud service and get the new one for "rental" think its 20 quid a month

yup, can make em...doesn't neccassarily make them any good lol, made what i thought would work as a shrapnel brush...seems to make odd leaf patterns instead...i'll suss it eventually lol

Various chain and repetitive patterns would be useful, just got to figure out the directional functions... That and a make look awesome brush...think i could market that
