Description       Trick-or-treaters! What a surprise! Granny usually doesn't get trick-or-treaters, living so far out of the way like, so she doesn't have any Halloween candy on her. But come right on in and make yourselves at home – Granny'll mix up some cookies. It just wouldn't be right to turn two lovely young girls away without something to eat, especially not on Halloween. It's so inhospitable, and you won't see it happening in this house!
What's that? Oh, my dear, you needn't worry about Granny being one of those nasty old strangers they warn you about. Razors in apples, children getting snatched from their beds... it just puts chills down Granny's spine. Those horror stories you young people read have nothing on the news. Oh, you're right to be cautious, dear, especially while you're taking care of your ... is she your little sister? Oh, you're babysitting her! How kind of you, dear. There's nothing Granny likes better than a good citizen. But enough chitchat. It's terribly rude to keep you two standing outside in the cold like this, there's such a chill tonight. Come in, come in. Sit down and warm yourselves by the fire. Granny's built it up nice and hot - old bones can't take as much cold as they used to.
Oh, it's so kind of you to come and keep Granny company, especially when there's so many other houses you could be getting your candy at. And Granny knows us old folks just aren't so interesting anymore. Granny hardly ever gets any visitors... it just gets so terribly lonesome out here at the end of the road.
But you didn't come here to hear old Granny moan about herself. How old are you, my dear? Six? And such a lovely plump little girl you are, too.
Oh, dear, you look offended. Ah me, Granny forgot again. You see, girls, in the olden days being fat was a compliment. It meant you had lots to eat, and you see not everybody did back then. Granny never quite got over thinking that way. See, Granny's just skin and bones, not at all beautiful.
Ah! The dough is finally done. My, doesn't it look good? Be a doll, dear, and check how hot the oven is? 'Twouldn't be good to burn the cookies, not after all the hard work that went into them. Granny'll just come with you, if that's alright – probably you young girls have never seen a wood stove...

Stop that shrieking at once, young lady! Anyone would think you were being tortured. How old are you? Sixteen? Well, that's old enough to know better, by my standards... Ah, me, today's youth is so delicate – they faint at anything!
Now, my dear, we'll just settle in and wait for those cookies to bake, and you can tell me all about yourself. We'll let your babysitter wake up on her own.

I'm so glad, I wasn't sure if I was making it too ... I don't know, obvious? It was really hard trying to strike a balance between subtle enough that people didn't think I was leading them anywhere and obvious enough that everybody thought they knew what was going to happen.

FISHKISS In reply to gimpbeginner [2009-11-08 02:23:55 +0000 UTC]

Nope! It starts out subtle until the reader's pretty much convinced the story's going to finish off one way, but (personally at least) I don't think it goes into the blatantly obvious or heavy or anything. Of course, the reader does realize the story is leading somewhere... but not at all what the real ending is going to be. Hmm.

Oh good. That was how I'd wanted it. I'd actually originally concieved it to end predicably, but then my contrariness kicked in and my dad misunderstood the ending anyway, so there you have it.

FISHKISS In reply to gimpbeginner [2009-11-18 20:14:33 +0000 UTC]

xDDD
I misunderstood it at first as well (as in I thought the old lady had done something to the girl and she was all like 'yeah cookies are baking' while the other kid was roasting in the oven or summat x000 My mind is strange and deranged. I understood pretty much at the last sentence though x]]])
Heehee, contrariness can rock 8D 'specially yours.

Nono, that was supposed to be what you thought. So that's good, it did what I wanted it to. Now I'm glad I added that last sentence... I thought it might be too much, but since you didn't get it till then, it means I did well.

The only thing that made me happy about the movie was the fact that they put a melody to that poem.

But yeah, HOLES is a wonderful book <333 It's something you reread as often as you like. Ever read Maniac Magee? That's a good one as well, in the category of frequent reads.

gimpbeginner In reply to FISHKISS [2010-01-31 03:47:42 +0000 UTC]

Maniac Magee... Something Spinelli? Yeah, I read it once, but I don't remember it hitting me particularly hard. Maybe I should try it again. Frequent reads for me would be I Want To Go Home by Gordon Korman. Hilarious book!

FISHKISS In reply to gimpbeginner [2010-01-31 08:34:22 +0000 UTC]

Heheh, I should see if my library has that one then 8DDD
Yeah, I think it's Spinelli - but in any case, I dunno, I'm just a hopeless sop for sweet-and-sad stories about growing up (even if they're amazingly off their rocker/unbelievable x333).

I don't know... you could try it. I hear he's reasonably well-recieved in the US...

D'you know, I've actually never read anything by Terry Pratchett! He's been on my to-read list for ages, but I've just never gotten around to it.

FISHKISS In reply to gimpbeginner [2010-02-02 05:59:24 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... I could order it on the Internet, I guess. 83

OH YOU MUST. Like... Thud!, Night Watch, Jingo, Monstrous Regiment... I love the Sam Vimes ones most, but read them all so you can find your own preference <333 The Colour of Magic/The Light Fantastic and Equal Rites are all good books which center on Sam Vimes. Thief of Time too... and lots of books on the witches (like Wyrd Sisters, which I haven't read yet). As you can see, I've developed a slight obsession over his series xDDD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gimpbeginner In reply to FISHKISS [2010-02-03 04:04:20 +0000 UTC]

Hrrm... I don't know - it might not be worth it. It's a good book, but for younger readers.

Awesome! I now have a new author to obsess over. Just put The Color of Magic/The Light Fantastic on hold. Speaking of which, have you ever Diane Duane's Young Wizards series? Of course you haven't - they're ridiculously obscure, which I find difficult to bear, since they're so much more deserving than so many other hits I could name. Like a cross between A Wrinkle In Time and Harry Potter, except she put out the first ones ten years before Harry Potter came out. They're just... AGH. Those ones, you should definitely order over the internet if you can't find them at your library. They're worth any price. The first one is So You Want To Be A Wizard.

FISHKISS In reply to gimpbeginner [2010-02-03 14:33:52 +0000 UTC]

(OOOH WAIT massive mistake I feel like a load of idiot right now xDDD Those Light Fantastic/etc DON'T center on Sam Vimes, gawd I'm so stupid, I hate typos, LOATHELOATHELOATHE)

HOBUTSTILL. 8D New books are fun (except for Twilight, ohgawdz the pain, no offence if you liked it). Good new books doubly so.

Young Wizards? I'm pretty sure I heard you talk about 'em before, with Zorraya's freaky-weird speech habits 8000
Oh gawds. The title sounds great. I think I'm going to have a spazz-fest reading these xDDD (ohgawsh I loved A Wrinkle in Time)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gimpbeginner In reply to FISHKISS [2010-02-04 00:05:04 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry about it - as long as they're not in the middle of a series, I'll be perfectly happy.

They are indeed! I always feel so spoiled coming home after a good library haul. Bath, book, bed, and I'm the happiest person in the world. Have you read La Princetta et le Capitaine? I'm reading it right now, and I'd be interested to hear your opinions.

YEAH, that was them. They're definitely worth a spazz-fest. Like, remember when you were convinced you were gonna get a letter (or at least I was...) from Hogwarts? I'm still holding out for my wizard's manual. Fifteen isn't unheard of...
(OH MAN I have that book practically memorized. I like A Swiftly Tilting Planet even better, though.)

FISHKISS In reply to gimpbeginner [2010-02-04 16:53:40 +0000 UTC]

Nope - every book can be taken individually. I only know the first two for being actually in a particular order (and a few of the books for younger readers). Other than that, it can still be interesting to read all the books in chronological order, simply to really get all the possible references to past events in later books x333

Totally <333 I haven't read it, but I surely will! (soon as I have time - we're getting to the end of a huge half-year project and getting to a mock exam so I don't really have all that much time to lounge in the library DDDD8 HORROR OF HORRORS)

xDDD If they haven't yet caught sight of your raw talent then either they've turned into old bats or (sadly ;_ they aren't quite there to catch sight of anything at all. Maybe you can have yourself be homeschooled in secret or something 8000
(Hmm... I don't remember that one - I should update my book register)

gimpbeginner In reply to FISHKISS [2010-02-04 23:39:18 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! I can't wait to get started...

Mock exam? Do you mean it doesn't count? HOW CAN YOU NOT HAVE TIME FOR THE LIBRARY?!? This is a tragedy of epic proportions, my dear.

I refuse to come to that conclusion until I absolutely have to... although I'm afraid you're right.

(It was the sequel to A Wrinkle In Time - she actually wrote quite a few books in her day.)

FISHKISS In reply to gimpbeginner [2010-02-05 18:15:08 +0000 UTC]

Mock exam like it's not the real exam, just practice - but the grades we get do count, unfortunately x000 And yes, it's a sacrilegious abomination unto my biblophilic religion.

Bah, not until anything's been proven <333 I SHALL BEGIN THE ARDUOUS SEARCH FOR... a school of wizardry. Wonder if you can enroll for free.

(Yeah, I think I remember there being something like that... the name didn't ring a bell though x000)

gimpbeginner In reply to FISHKISS [2010-02-06 00:22:55 +0000 UTC]

That sucks... but I have faith that you'll pass them with flying colours. Especially if you've been making the sacrifice of not going to the library for it - no deity would be so cruel as to arrange otherwise.

I think there's a price - but it's not always the one you expect...
