Description
It has been a while since the last time I have drawn a unicorn. Unicorns are my favorite fantastical creatures. I should draw more of them.Unicorns were celebrated in Old Europe as a symbol of Christ. Each was depicted as a lamb with a lion's tail and of course a single horn. The horn pierces dragon hide as dragons were considered symbols of Satan. They were gentle to the pure, but ferocious towards evil according to these Christian legends.Β The chimeric beast is regarded as the lord of the forests. All woodlands and their animals were under his dominion. The unicorn uses his horn, also called the alicorn, to purify the fountainhead in which all rivers come from every morning before any other forest animals could drink.
In Old Europe, the existence of unicorns was taken as a fact. The ruling class traded for alicorns and their derivatives in the belief that the unicorn's horn could neutralize poisons in their food and drinks and cure diseases. Narwhal tusks were often sold by apothecaries as alicorns.Β The beast's status as a Christian symbol for Jesus Christ, piety, chastity and purity is evident today in it still being used in European heraldry.
