After feeling the hand gently but firmly grip his shoulder, Rush turned his head and looked up, seeing his father behind him, looking down at him. Sonic usually was the bright, happy type of father- but right now, his stare was harsh as he stared at Rush with a sneer.
"What was that last thing you said to her?" Sonic asked in a low, smooth voice. Rush clenched up and gulped before uttering out words again.
"Th-that... I... uh... I hate her...?" He answered, his voice now trembling. Sonic's icy glare didn't break. It probably got colder.
"Apologize. Right now." He said. More tears formed in Rush's eyes but didn't start falling down his face yet.
"B-But...!"
"Right. Now."
Rush suddenly started choking on sobs that travelled up his throat as he coughed, the tears now rolling down his face, the places under his eyes already getting red and puffy.
"B-But sh-she gave me a-away! She d-doesn't love me! So w-why should I-I-I love a mother l-like her...?!" He whimpered through sobs, his chest heaving. His father sighed and turned him around to him, placing his other hand on Rush's other shoulder.
"Rush, think about it, okay? If your mother truly didn't have some kind of love for you, do you really think you would've ended up with me? Because I think if she really didn't love you, she would've just dumped you in an orphanage. I don't like what she did either, but if you really think about it, without that decision you never would've known me that well. Your mother and I never love-loved each other, so it was either her or me."
"But what about h-her never keeping i-in touch with me? Or me never m-meeting h-her?" The small hedgemunk cried.
"I didn't fully agree with that either, but she said that she could never compare to the mom you have now. But..." Sonic looked over at Sally. "You should at least try, Sally. Stop running from him. He's your son after all. And Rush, don't ever say that you hate her again. Hate is a strong word, and words hurt. Try to communicate through your problems with her, okay? I know it's hard but... This battle of inner struggles and fears between you two has gone on long enough."
Sally and Rush looked at each other as Sally put her daughter down.
"Rush... I'm sorry... About all those things... I was an awful mother to you, and I have no excuse for it. But I want to be better for you! Will... Will you ever forgive me...?" Sally asked in a quiet voice again. Rush just stared into her blue eyes before sighing, wiping his own tears away.
"Yeah... I... I forgive you... And I'm sorry for saying that I hate you... I didn't mean it..." Rush said. Sally smiled, a single tear rolling down her cheek and dripping off her chin.
"That's okay... I forgive you too."

Both Rush and Sally have a long road ahead of them to fix their relationship but if this is any indication Sonic will be a good guide for them.

Yeah, he probably would've if it were one of his more stubborn kids, but Sonic knows that Rush is easy to sway when it comes to arguments, which leads to warnings and harsh talks instead. He knows Rush will turn right around and change.
