They always ambush me in Riverwood right at the start of the game. I usually jump on the log pile by the mill and spam them with long-range spells.

I've had this happen to me in every playthrough I think. The newest one though, I haven't found out why yet... though I assume its because I keep sneakin around and pickpocketing people

Yeah, that's pretty typical. It seems no matter what i do, after i get past riverwood in a new save, The crazy old lady (Helga?), keeps calling thugs on me. So i gave up and killed her.

This was me exactly. They just came strutting out of nowhere, and I was like 'sure, okay, some random dudes'. Then they started attacking me.... I died, needless to say.

That happened to me when I was on my way to slay my very first dragon! I ran away from them and then they attacked me... while I attacked the dragon... I should not have killed that chicken.

yup, this happened to me as well by the time i got to the honey-brew meadery. a gaggle of goons march up to me like "were gonna teach u a lesson" and I'm like "wait wh--*broadsword to the face*"
they are tough as nails too
