all i can say about being good in art (and for what i know in everything else) all you need is commitment and practice..a lot of practice.
if you apply enough things will come, there's no need to hurry to reach this or that level or style, just practice a lot from the basics

yes it is, much easier to reference from something you have and use often instead of something based on just a picture

I see the girl as a hiker, working with some organization in a place far from civilization. And from that I build the idea of her stumbling upon something she shouldn't have, personally something with a dark, spiritual nature.
