Description
This is a study of Ayami Kojima's painting.

I also used a Japanese book called 色彩王国3, which includes an interview of Kojima's drawing process.

Tools:
Arches hot press watercolor paper
pencil
kneaded eraser
Dr. Martins black star india ink
Blair matte spray fixative
Liquitex molding paste
Liquitex acrylics

Process:

1. pencil underdrawing:

I think this is one of the most crucial steps. If the pencil drawing is not good, the later rendering cannot fix the mistakes.

2. Adding India Ink to map shadow and light relationship:

This is the step I enjoy the most. In some way I like the gray scale-drawing better than the colored one haha.

3. Use spray fixative and gesso to make sure the underlying drawing won't be smudged later on when I add molding paste and acrylic.
Kojima seems to only use India Ink and gesso to fix the drawing, but when I tried to apply gesso on test paper, the ink gets smudged. So I used spray fixative first.

4. Add colors on the foreground and apply molding paste to the background:

5. Add background color and some highlights (I think I need to tone done some highlights later, especially on the wings). Finished!
