Description Instructions Below

Welcome to this very large tutorial about Digital Art! Amy Rose will be our guinea pig--- er, hedgehog today.

What you will need:
-Tablet
-openCanvas (I use version 1.1, but any version is fine)
-GIMP (Preferable version 2.4.6)

Once you have all that, you can follow the steps below.

1. Open openCanvas and create a new file. Select the pencil tool, and sketch the basic form of the character in red.

2. Add more details and a background. Darken the lines that you want to keep so you won't forget.

3. Make a new layer above the sketch and do the lineart. Make sure to turn off transparency on the pencil tool, and change the color to black. Here's a tip: When there are corners in your lineart, make a little curve to round it out.

4. Once you've finished the lineart, delete the sketch layer and save it as a bmp. Then go to GIMP and open the file. Go to Layer, Transparency, and select Color to Alpha. Then click Okay. This will make everything but the lines transparent. Then go to File, Save As, and change the file type from bmp to xcf.

5. Now, create a new layer under the lineart one. Use the painbrush tool to fill in Amy's flat colours. Then create a layer under that one and fill in the flat colours for the background.

6. Create a new layer above Amy's colour layer. Use darker shades of Amy's colours to make shadows. Keep in mind where your light source is.

7. Create a layer below the shadow layer for the highlights. Change your brush from circle to fuzzy for this. Put the highlights where you want the light to be coming in. Now for the highlight colours, for example, I used orange for Amy's boots and magenta for her fur.

8. Create a new layer above the highlight layer. Change the brush back to a circle, and make your colour white. Start to add shines where the highlights are.

9. Now make a layer above the background colour layer. Add shadows to the background, and use the same method as in step 6.

10. Finally, make a new layer below the background shadow layer, and add shine/highlights.

And, wallah! You're done! Well, that's my tutorial for digital art. Hope it helps!

Hanvon 8x6 Graphicpal Tablet. It cost about $104, but it's way better then those cheap $45 tablets.

For this picture, I used openCanvas 1.1 for the sketch and lineart and GIMP 2.4.6 for everything else. The tablet that I use is a Hanvon Graphicpal.

They are free, you know. Since openCanvas 1.1 is such an early version of the program, it's free. And GIMP is a free alternative to Photoshop that keeps getting updated. The tablet, however, you have to buy. My current one cost $104 since it is a really high quality. But some tablets can cost only $20-$40.
