As a photographer (albeit an addictive amateur!) I understand most people believe the SUBJECT does all the work - the posing, the grouping, trying not to squint. That is why I love this photo! Look at her! The photographer is doing the work!! And she, as I have so many times, is willing to contort herself to make the shot! Hope she got it....

This is great, Alex!
Can I ask you a few things? Was this shot in RAW or JPEG? If JPEG, which settings did you set the camera mode to? What software did you use for post? I can never get this look on my Black and White photos...
I really want to achieve this so I thank you in advance.

Wow thanks for your comment damien!

THis was shot in JPEG and i always Shoot AV (Aperture Priority). I generally shoot RAW for nature shots, but for street it's always JPEG.

I always shoot in color on my camera and then in Photoshop I convert the image to monochrome (assuming it is going to black and white). I do this by creating two channel mixer adjustment layers. On the first one, the settings are: Red=0%, Green=20%, and blue=80%, give or or take. (Also, make sure "monochrome" is checked.) Then lower this adjustment layer to about 50%, this can always be adjusted in a second to better suit your photo. The Second Channel mixer layer's settings should be: Red=100% then 0% for green and blue, also making sure monochrome is checked. This layer remains at 100% and now you can readjust the first layer to make it look better.

The next step for me is either dodging/burning, if I think any needs to be done.

Then I add contrast with a mixture of Curves and Levels.

Next is vignetting. Sometimes i use two vignettes in my photos. (Let me know if you need a run through on creating a vignette.)

Finally I save the image as a PSD and a JPEG. I then open the JPEG and unsharp mask the image. If i plan on putting it on dA, I then resize the image and slap a border on it.

Hope this helps

Awesome!! Thank you! I'm copying this to a text file and save it so I can practice.
About the vignetting, I really love that effect and I easily do it within Lightroom. There's an option just for that, which is brilliant!
Thank you again, my friend! This was most valuable to me. I tried so much before and I could never achieve this look. I'll let you know.

Haha... reminds me of myself in New York City lying on the street trying to get a picture of Saint Patrick's Cathedral and trying to fit in the sky and the reflection of the sky in the other building. Tricky buisness- I feel for her

Nice shot Alex, very candid.
