Description
Demeter. When her daughter Persephone was abducted by Hades, ruler of the Underworld, Demeter was devastated. She roamed the Earth in search of her daughter neglecting her duties; harvests, crops, ripening of fruits, flowers were abandoned and nothing germinated, no seeds nor sprouts. The cries of the famished people roused Zeus's attention and he decided to get Persephone back. In the meantime, the girl had tasted a fruit from the Underworld, six pomegranate seeds, so she was bound to Hades. Therefore, Zeus declared that she would stay six months with Hades in the Underworld as his wife and six months on Earth with her mother. Demeter's joy was so overwhelming that the world started blooming again. Her joy was to last for half a year in spring and summer, when plants, fruits and flowers ripen. The other six months she was to spend in the Underworld and all nature withered and died as happens in autumn and winter.
