Lirael felt the stars call to her, and a yearning rose in her heart to answer. -Abhorsen (Garth Nix)The abhorsen/old kingdom series was one of my favorites as a kid, and, in about a weeks time, a new book is coming out! Sooooo I drew a thing. I've drawn a thing before too
you know what's more annoying to draw than lots of tiny keys? lots of tiny keys on lots of tiny stars? you know what's more annoying to draw than that? a starry sky

Tiny keys and tiny stars and lots of bells and details. It's almost like the Lucky Charms theme. Good consistency on the little details.
I didn't know that series was ongoing. Are you excited?

need some rainbows in there for that i think. i've now noticed that the water level appears to be a little tilted, and it's not actually tilted on the paper. i had to edit the image a little in PS after i took a photo because i took it from a slightly off angle, and i had to fix the sides to be parallel-ish but apparently that messed up the water line while i wasn't paying attention. oops. oh well. not gonna fix iiiiiit.

How'd you do that anyway? Was the water brought in through image editing? (and it isn't that noticeable)

i did the whole thing with sumi ink, some pen nibs, some brushes, and a white gel pen. the brushes (and ink of course) were used for the water.
i used PS's "warp" uhh ability? function? to make the lines from my crappy photo parallel again but i think i dragged one side further down than the other ever so slightly.

I thought it looked like inked work (and the use of actual water explains the waviness of the drawn/brushed water). Cool multimedia stuff. How long did it take?

i spent two days on it... but like, good, long chunks of two days... the stars alone took several hours

ehhh, i sometimes get asked what i'm drawing, but I'm usually secluded in my room so people don't walk by that often

You keep your door open? I always shut mine because otherwise I get interrupted. I don't mind drawing in front of other people, and at times I enjoy it, but it's kind of like when you are trying to watch your favorite show on TV and someone else keeps trying to talk to you about something else because the show doesn't interest them.
Which reminds me, I started Cowboy Bebop. I like this Spike fellow and his comrades. I am just five episodes in and I think most of the first four was a character building prologue. And there is an old farmer with a Nebraska N hat, no doubt about it. Why are Japanese cartoons from the 90s (like Trigun's family of redneck giants) referencing Nebraska? My best guess is that we were frequently in the news in those years because of football (years and years of consecutive championships) and the name sounds interesting to speakers of Japanese.

i usually keep it open or cracked unless i'm trying to keep the pets out or i'm on the phone/skype or something (which is rare)
everyone in my family usually keeps to themselves though so i don't get interrupted that often
i watched that somewhat recently but i think the effect was kinda ruined on me because the site i tried watching it on had the episodes out of order and i didn't figure that out till a ways in

Pets will curl up on all of your electronics if you do not stop them. They are a menace from beyond the seventh hell, which is the hell of fluffiness.
Then you should use your phone/skype more often to confuse your family and make them suspicious of why your door is always closed. Are you up to something? Have you become a late-blooming goth? (drawing little black roses on everything and spending all your time around black pens and ink) Has an alien replaced you and is it confused that your cat is named after tea?
Same here. Parents take the living room, bro takes the basement, and I take my room. I think my mom would like us all to be together more often, but we all also recognize that time alone is crucial to our well being. People who spend too much time around each other get uncomfortable and possibly aggravated.
Ouch. I hope the ones I'm watching are in order. I am watching it on YouTube and the story seemed to skip after episode four. Things got suddenly serious in five with grenades and bandages and backstories revealed all at once. Only the first two were in English. One of my friends who is a big fan of anime only watches episodes once they come out in English. He doesn't like reading the subtitles. I must admit that subtitles are less immersive than understanding the spoken words, however, I don't mind as long as sound matches up. I get the picture.

all rooms are pretty much always occupied in my house unless people aren't home.
i didn't watch it on youtube so probably? i kinda just assumed it was one of those animes where you start out confused and slowly figure out wth is going on.
most of my friends are strict about subs only. course, a good chunk of my friends have taken japanese. i prefer japanese because i think some things sound stupider when said in a language you can understand, and anime characters say some wild things.

Like most? XD I am going to watch episode 10 next and I noticed several episodes share plot elements with Samurai Champloo. I can then appreciate the homage to Cowboy Bebop made in Champloo years later. The videos I am watching were posted recently and it is my hope that they are not taken down before I finish watching the series.
Your friends are neeeeeeeeeeerds. Or would that be weebs? I do not know, that was the word you used to describe people who prefer Japanese things. I understand how you feel. Sometimes phrases or ideas don't translate well. Other times I have noticed direct translations swapped out for local sayings and familiar slang. One of my favorite jokes in Death Note goes thusly: "And what would you do if Light were Kiiiiira (L always rolled that name when he spoke) and were found guilty?" "What? I would stay with him. I couldn't live in a world without Light!" "Yes, that would be dark." L's deadpan delivery is what makes it good. That joke was in English. However, other jokes in Ouran did not work out as well when spoken in English. I cannot think of an example right now, but it happened several times.
I listen to heavy metal in Norse, Gaelic, Gaulish, or German because HEAVY heavy metal in English sounds stupid to me. haha

i think she just likes the vantage points that doorways present. she can see more things than when not in a doorway and she likes knowing where her people are.
i've only ever seen a bit of saurai champloo. forget why i didn't finish it but i think it was an internet thing.

maddie's favorite bad japanese pun she's come across so far was when two characters were talking about a tasty steak and one of them said you could call it a "suteki na suteeki" suteki meaning lovely and suteeki meaning steak (and na is a connector for some adjectives)

That sounds like something a teacher trying to be cool and relate to the kids would say. haha I know "earth worm" in Japanese is "oss wom," and I used to know a joke about that. It apparently sounds like another Japanese word/phrase. Most of their puns seem to be in Katakana. You should ask Maddie if there is some sort of joke about the word meaning speaker of Japanese and a hypothetical word meaning speaker of carrot. I think the last word in the joke ends in ringo.

H's and F's are written with the same hiragana in japanese and the noise is kinda a mish-mash of the two corresponding sounds

Interesting. Hfhfhfhfhfhfhfhfhf. Her name is almost identical to the name for the pawn-like piece in Shogi, too. When captured and flipped, the symbol on the tile resembles an open handcuff. But the Shogi piece may simply be called Fú while her name is Fúu (or maybe Fuú).
Drat. I know it rhymes. The rhythm is "darumba rum baringa rum, barumba dum waringa rum?" It ends like a question.
