Good to see that I wasn't the only one thinking of the episode "Calm Down, Two Men" with this.
XD Although after seeing so much of your artwork its so surreal to see Rock have such a contented grin on his face while now it's Revy who's got the whole "I'd rather be anywhere else but here" look on her face.

XD anyway to your point I think Rock generally does work best when his strange faces often reflect that of how the common viewer (I.E the person Rock was kinda written to be in Black Lagoon... Well for as close as a person can be to the average Salaryman) would react to whatever situations he's in.

yep, he's pretty plain and normal if you consider the other characters and much more easy to identify with...also the story is pretty much from his point of view so you discover the pirates' world with himΒ

But in doing so I think that's honestly what makes Rock work compared to everyone else who is either packing their own emotional turmoil with them, or those who're just corrupted and looking to take control of Roanapur with what little power control over the city would give them.
And given how Rock's kindness and decency was usually met with either cynical rejection or like in the case of The Vampire Twins a bloody miserable end, its really easy to see why his spirit has dimmed in the later parts of the story.

yep, all true the others are a bit more "sterotypes" than Rock, he ends up having a lot more shades of character than Revy for example. Ok she's got her reasons for being like this and even changes, but it's all a lot more subtle than with Rock, we have to work it out by ourselvesΒ

Rock's a lot more of a puzzle to be certain (Hell Roberta's Blood Trail showed exactly the kind of person he's likely gonna become given how his intellect seems to be his true weapon in the Criminal Underworld of Roanapur)
Not to say that characters like Revy or the like aren't fleshed out, but their emotional baggage is on more of a surface level response to their experiences and thus the harsh nature of why they do what they do becomes quite clear.
I feel so teased that we only got a taste of Rock's true manipulative capabilities, and I'm curious to see whether or not he keeps his morals and decency or instead just adapts to the corruption and goes down a darker path.

I'm now reading the manga and I only have Roberta's Blood Trail left of the part that the anime covers, then I'm heading to unknown territory...I'm really curious of what is going to happen

The Manga I've dipped in and out of with specific arcs.
I've been meaning to read the thing in its entirety but so many other Mangas and Anime have been eating up my time. But I do plan to read it in full at some stage.

Black Lagoon is an Anime that I always make time to watch, and the Manga is something I definitely plan on reading all the way through.
