Description Samuel Beckett Bridge, Dublin. A beautiful piece of engineering I spotted on my first trip to the city. The photo doesn't do it justice!

The bridge is beautiful and nice try with the photo.
I am trying to be as fair as possible with this.

Personally I find the reflections of light in the water a bit distracting as they do not balance with the lack of light on the bridge. For example the large reflection patch on the left had side I would have editted slight in Photoshop as it is just a bit too bright.

Secondly I would have editted out all the reflections of the street laps as the yellow light detracts from the white light on the bridge and the reflections off it.

Finally the buildings behind the bridge that have their lights on, I believe detract from the image. A solution would be waiting until the middle of the night to take the shot when all the lights would be off. This would draw more attention to the bridge.
Also if you had waited until later at night you could also up the exposure time to try to gain more detail on the right had side of the bridge on the 'harp strings'.

I hope there are some useful ideas there.

Cheers for the critique dude - I welcome suggestions and comments as I'm always trying to improve my work.

I see your point about the reflections of light - I didn't really think about that when I took the shot. I will play around in PS now you've drawn my attention to it and see what I can do. Am just annoyed I didn't catch that when I took the photo originally

I kind of like the yellow lighting, however I see what you mean in this case, it is a bit jarring, although I thought it made a warmer contrast for the start white of the bridge. Though I will now start checking the surrounding light sources when I take photo's now on.

I wish I had the viewpoint and the time to have waited or got the photo without the lights on. Sadly I was only in Dublin for a day or so at a conference. Though I will definitively go back and try again at some point in the future. It is a stunning piece of architecture and I hope to get a picture that fully does it justice

Some cool ideas there - I'll have a play in Photoshop at some point to see what I can get. I do need to work on my choice of viewpoint and awareness of light sources though.

No worries dude and cheers for reply. Sucks that you didn't have time to wait around and stoked at the idea that you might go back and try the shot again.
I'm sure you will get it looking super sick. If you do get round to taking it please hit me up with a link.

Peace

Beautiful photo! I love city shots, especially at night. The lights stand out really well, and I love how I get this peaceful feeling just looking at this photo. Excellent work!

I think the composition is great, you've got that massive arch leading our eyes from the left of the image to the right, and along the way we see all the other details.

I do agree with the critique written by ~TNH-Ed-Hill , though. The reflections throw the photo off somewhat - especially the really bright one on the left.

I also think there could be a little more exposure and light in the photo overall, it does seem a little dark which takes away some details.

But, I think it's a lovely shot! Keep up the good work

Thanks very much for the comment and for the critique of my photo. I'm currently working on minimizing the reflections as I agree that they are a distraction.

Hmm, that's something to watch next time - the exposure I mean. I'm always learning, so the more tips the better!

Found your photo in the group...

I agree that this bridge is quite beautiful, but I can barely see it. I love the bottom part of the bridge and how it is lit, but I wish the top were lit as well. I believe that a shot at dusk or dawn with no direct sunlight, but just a bit more ambient lighting would have helped this photo a lot. Also, perhaps a bit of a different angle (i.e. further to the left) would have helped with telling me (the viewer) that the buildings are just a part of the background, and not of the subjects of the photo.

I think you have a great eye for knowing what can make a great photo, as this bridge is so interesting, I'm definitely drawn to the photo.

Thanks very much for commenting - I know what you mean about the lighting. I hope to go back and try that shot again some day as it is an awesome piece of architecture.

I will try some of your tips when I take other shots - The comment about the changing the POV to differentiate subjects and background is something I'm trying to work on, but I guess that comes with experience.

Cheers, have a look at Google search of the bridge for what I wish it would look like

This is a very nice shot,I love how the sky/water/lights come together so well and the angle of the shot gives it a nice feel as well.I would, however in a photo editing program to sort of brighten the lights and make them stand out even more

Thanks very much for taking the time to comment I am currently working on a photo-shopped version to sort out the lights, as they are a little annoying Keep an eye out and let me know what you reckon. Hopefully should be uploaded in the next few weeks (work willing)

I do really like the point of view here actually..

Aswell as you managed to catch the strings to the ''harp'' slowly fading away is just neat. ;D

Thou.. The water reflections are abit.. Distracting. They do not blend in fully.

Cheers for the comment! I did like the strings effect on the bridge, unfortunately was not able to hang around long to get a better shot. Will definately try again! I am currently tweaking in Photoshop, so keep an eye out in the next week or so and tell me what you think Cheers.

This is a very nice photo. It has a sort of surreal feeling to it, like a futuristic city on some faraway world (or maybe just us in the future). I do have to agree with others, though, that the photo overall is too dark. The top of the bridge is obscured and the colors are muted in some places. You could try playing with the levels in Photoshop (or similar editing process) to clear it up a bit. I like the reflections on the water, though, and the fading light in the background. Nicely done.

Cheers That's a nice interpretation of it. Yeh I wish the lighting conditions were different, but I came across the bridge by accident, so I was limited in my choices. A shame really as it is a stunning piece of architecture. I am playing around in PS at the moment, I am hoping upload the results soon.

Thanks for your comment and the fave on it. Hopefully I will be able to go back to Ireland eventually and give it another go

This is a beautiful piece! The dark lighting in the piece is perfect, and the gold contrasts beautifully with the inky sky!
The only thing I'd suggest is to make the overall piece lighter, but I understand if it was a dark night.
That aside, this still a stunning picture! The angle and moment of capture are both breathtaking!

Thanks very much for the comment! Yeh it was a spur of the moment set up as It was the first time I've been to Dublin and saw it. The photo doesn't really do the bridge justice I thought. I'd recommend a look if you ever go to Dublin.

In what way lighter? I would have liked a daytime photo as well, but free time was a definite issue, hehehe.

You're welcome!

Well, I just feel that some of the pillars on the bridge are a bit obscured, but I understand what you're saying about the free time.
It's a rest shot either way!

Fair do's - I am still playing with it in photoshop at the moment. But I hope to go back to Ireland eventually and get a better natural shot of the bridge.
