-… Yay… I can sure lend you my rod, son but… why ?
The fierce looking kittom stared at Tendo with a bit of defiance and answered
- Because I need it to learn to fish. That’s a needed skill for me to know how to survive in the wild and become a scout.
The sun was shining hard on Azha’s sand dunes on this bright afternoon. The caravan was at some rest before moving in another region, near a lovely oasis, providing sweet shadow and fresh water.
The warm wind blew over the kittom hair as he was standing in front of the adult in a nearly… Challenging attitude.
Tendo looked at him few long seconds… Probably waiting for the missing punchline. But… no, the kittom seemed really serious. He scratched his head and told to the child
-Well, to learn how to fish you need fishes as well and there’s not a single one in this pool for sure.
But I can show you the ropes if you…
-Oh don’t take this line with me old man ! I heard you before ! You told that a good fisher can fish even in a glass of water ! Don’t go easy on me, I’m not a fresh born kittom. I’m nearly a scout I just need to learn how to fish and I’ll taught it myself like I always do !

-It was a joke kiddos…
-Just lend me your rod and I’ll take it from here.

The rode seemed just fine… So there should have another reason why he was not catching anything since the two hours that just passed.
He started to feel a bit silly… And what if… What if the skilled fishernin was right ? Was it just a joke ? was there no fish in there ? Then why does Tendo seemed to find some in this desert ? Did he… buy them ?

Doubt was growing in him when he saw a dark and big shadow in the water. He gasped, and didn’t have the time to see the shape of it. It went straight to his line and pulled it with so much strength that…. The kittom flew in the air few seconds and felt into the water.

- HEY KID ! WATCH IT ! LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THIS CATCH ! TIME TO WRASSLE IT !

An heavy mess of splashes, screams and laughs followed.

When Tendo caught back the kittom’s vest and finally put him to the ground, he had the biggest trouble to stop himself of laughing. And every fiber of Daim’s body was filled with water and anger.

The adult sat next to him, Daim was too exhausted to run away so… He gave Tendo his best aggressive stare, but it didn’t seem very effective as the blue nin was still laughing and smiling.
Then he spoke with quite the complicit attitude.

- As long as you weight less than a salmon, you won’t be able to fish properly with this rod, son. Fishing is not supposed to be wrestling you know…
But from what I have saw it’s not the fishing skill that you need to learn first. Swimming is not about fluff floating, messy legs struggling and drinking water.

Daim’s anger grew even stronger.
-If you learn to swim, dive, and stay under the surface for a while, you’ll be able to catch easily crabs and shellfishes and… it would be a good start.
I can teach you how to swim if you want.

The kittom blinked at the adult while thinking. This… This sounded like a good idea, but… He was not comfortable with learning something from an elnin. Finn was his master…

- Well, you know how to find me kid ! I would be glad to help ya on this. I know you can do much Betta than this ! I really believe that to the bottom of my sole. 8D

-… Yay… ‘Sûr que je peux te passer ma canne fiston mais… Pourquoi ?
Le fier kittom toisa Tendo du regard avant de répondre.
- Parce que je dois apprendre à pêcher. C’est une compétence nécessaire pour qui souhaite survivre dans la nature et j’en ai besoin pour ma future fonction d’éclaireur.
Le soleil brillait fort et écrasait de sa chaleur les dunes de sables d’Ahza en cette après-midi aveuglante. La caravane prenait un peu de repos auprès d’une calme oasis offrant ombre et fraicheur, avant de reprendre sa route vers une autre région.
Le vent brûlant soufflait à travers les cheveux de Daim qui se tenait droit et impassible en face de l’adulte dans une attitude… de défi.
Tendo l’observa pendant une poignée de longues secondes… Il attendait certainement la chute de la blague. Mais non, le kittom avait l’air on ne peut plus sérieux. Il se gratta la tête et répondit à l’enfant :
-Ouais, mais pour apprendre à pêcher c’est mieux avec des poisons et y’a pas l’ombre d’une écaille d’un seul ici. Mais si tu veux j’peux déjà te montrer quelques ficelles sur le matérie….
- Oh ne fais pas genre avec moi ! Je t’ai entendu l’autre soir ! Tu as dit qu’un bon pêcheur pourrait pêcher même dans un verre d’eau !! Pas la peine de me traiter comme un marmot, je sais me débrouiller ! Je serais bientôt un éclaireur et j’apprendrai à pêcher par moi-même comme j’ai appris tout ce que je sais ! J’ai besoin de personne.

- Le verre d’eau, c’était une blague, gamin…
- Prête-moi ta canne, et je me débrouillerai.

La canne semblait de bonne facture, du moins pour ce qui lui semblait… Donc il devait y avoir une autre raison pour laquelle il n’avait encore rien attrapé depuis deux heures.
Un doute l’étreint… Et si… Et si le pêcheur officiel de la caravane avait raison ? C’était juste une blague ? Il n’y avait vraiment aucun poisson dans cet oasis ? Mais alors comment faisait-il pour continuer à cuisine et à servir du poisson à la caravane? Est-ce qu’il… l’achetait ?

Le doute était en train d’enfler en lui quand il aperçu une ombre gigantesque dans l’eau. Il sursauta, mais n’eut guère le temps de distinguer la forme de la créature. Elle se dirigea droit sur sa ligne, la choppa et la tira avec tellement de forces…. Que le kittom quitta le sol, flotta dans les airs quelques secondes et retomba dans l’eau.

- HEY GAMIN ! R’GARDE CA! MATE LE BESTIAU! LE LAISSE PAS FILER CHOPPE LE !

Un bazar étourdissant de cris, de rires et de splashs suivit pendant une ou deux minutes aux termes desquelles Tendo attrapa le petit par la veste et le ramena sur la berge… Ayant toutes les peines du monde à se retenir de rire.

Côté Daim, chaque fibre de son corps était tendue et gonflée d’eau et de colère.
L’elnin bleu s’assit à côté de lui, mais il était trop épuisé pour fuir… Il lui offrit cependant le regard le plus noir dont il était capable… Ce qui ne semblait pas follement efficace vu que l’adulte lui souriait encore bêtement et commença à lui parler sur le ton de la confidence, comme s’ils étaient amis…

- Tant que tu pèseras autant qu’un saumon t’arriveras à rien avec cette canne, fiston. Tu te bats bien mais la pêche n’est pas censée se finir à main nue dans l’eau tsé ?
Mais de ce que j’ai vu, avant la pêche y’a aut’ chose que tu d’vrais travailler. Nager c’est pas juste compter sur sa fourrure en flotteurs et balancer des coups de pattes dans tous les sens.

La colère de Daim enfla encore.
- Si t’apprends à nager, plonger et à garder ton souffle sous l’eau pendant quelques temps, alors t’auras aucun mal à chopper quelques crabes et coquillages sous l’eau… et ça serait un bon début.
J’peux t’apprendre ça s’tu veux.

Le kittom cligna des yeux en considérant l’adulte et sa proposition. ça… ça sonnait comme une bonne idée, mais… Mais il n’avait pas l’habitude d’apprendre auprès des elnins. Il se méfiait d’eux.

- Bon, ben tu sais ou m’trouver fiston ! ça me f’rait plaisir de t’aider la d’ssus. C’est plus marrant à deux ! Reste pas tout sole dans ton coin ! 8D
