Description
...are better left lost and forgotten... One never knows what may happen when using an ancient spell.Twilight found this particular spell tucked away in a rarely-used section of the Canterlot Castle's vast library and, being overjoyed at discovering a lost bit of magic, decided to test it out. The results were... Well, let's just say it was lucky that Celestia and Luna were nearby, and were able to stop her before the spell was fully cast. Had it been allowed to be completed, it would have been catastrophic.

Due to this piece being more focused on the character, rather than the picture as a whole, I was able to put a bit more attention into shading Twilight. The glow from the rune circle was a bit of a pain to get right, though.
I would have finished this a lot earlier, but thanks to a rather unlucky combination of weird work hours, and discovering how much I like Civilization 5 (especially with the Equestrian civilization mod), I've ended up getting severely delayed in basically everything outside of work.

The shading here is pretty amazing.
I'm usually pretty lazy and just stick a layer on top of my base, and use a darker spraypaint for the bulk of shadow shading, and a lighter shade for highlights. After looking at this I might try using three darks and lights instead of one with my spraycan to see if I can emulate this nice incrementally smooth finish.
Looks like Summoning magic there... probably just as well she was stopped in time.
Last thing we need is pesky humans in Equestria...

There's nothing really special, actually. It's just time consuming, and there's probably a better way to get the same effect.
I use the pen tool to create dark (usually the pony's body color at 10% brightness) blobs of color in a layer over the body in the general shape of what I imagine the shadows to look like. Then I use gaussian blur (I vary the size according to the area being shaded) to soften the edges. Then I just trim away the excess with the pen tool.
The only problem with this technique is that there's usually a lot of stepping backwards (CTRL+ALT+Z) to get the initial outline of the shadow to look right, and it can get needlessly annoying at times.
