From How To Train Your DragonSize: 3' x 2'

Made from llama and alpaca wool, over a wire frame for gentle posing. He's much larger than I originally intended but I love him anyway.

Do you know if raw wool is available at hobblylobby? I prefer not to order online.

Haven't the foggiest - I don't live anywhere near a Hobby Lobby I've seen little packs of wool in both Michael's and Joanne's, so there're good odds that HL has them too. Your best bet would be to call before you go!

OH. MY. GOD.
I don't think I could have the PATIENCE, much less SKILL to do something this absolutely, positively EPIC.

I think that everyone can do this. It is very fun and relaxing. Plus, when you finish, you have a great toy to play with!

Thank you!
I'm not sure if I could really create a tutorial, however, since there is no real pattern or sequence to making Toothless here. If you have questions on my specific materials or tools, I'd be happy to answer them though!

I use a brush pad to make flat pieces of felt. It is an essential tool!!

Don't die!! Just go out and get some felting needles and black wool!! Everyone should have a soft and fuzzy Toothless all their own!!

Yes! I tried here to copy the pose of one of the end-credit drawings of Toothless I ...didn't entirely succeed
It really is a fantastic movie, great for everyone who wanted (and still wants) a dragon for a friend!!

Whoa, is this sculpture really 3 feet by 2 feet? Amazing. Needle-felting seems to take exponentially longer the larger the sculpture is, so my hat is off to you.
Great work, and I loved the movie too!

Thanks! He's 2 feet from nose to tail and 3 feet from wingtip to wingtip. Toothless is pretty slender however, the time-consuming bit was making all that flat felt for his wings!

Cool! ;D If I may ask, how on earth did you make his wings?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
GlassCamel In reply to Lunekat [2011-06-29 01:46:36 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! (:
They're pretty simple: I needle-felted loads of feathers, stuck long wires through each feather, arranged all the feathers into a 'wing' and stuck that through the bird! I have a link to photos of the process in the artist comment above, if you're curious.

GlassCamel In reply to Lunekat [2011-06-30 00:13:15 +0000 UTC]
Pfft. Wow, how epically derptastic of me. Sorry!
Kinda the same deal with Toothless: felted big flat sections using a brush pad, felted roving onto the wings of his wire skeleton, then felted the two together. Unwieldy when I was making him, but it is pretty sturdy!

is that 3 by 2 FEET? o.O wow.. that's HUGE! .. was about to ask if he was for sale or if you planned on making any more to sell but at that size I dread to think what the postage would be!! lol
he's amazing! in fact... looking at your gallery now all your stuff looks amazing!.. think I might have to watch ya!

GlassCamel In reply to KatCardy [2011-06-20 04:59:00 +0000 UTC]
He's mostly wings and tail
I didn't intend to make him so big but once I make a head I'm kinda stuck with that scale
If I ever made another, I'd try to scale it down a bit: making that much flat felt for wings was exhausting!

Wow he's big! That must have taken forever. Was he a commission or is he for sale? Very cool needle felted work!
