"diet" cat food is filled with carbohydrates that carnivores, which cats are, cannot break down properly and thus turn into sugars, which in turn turns into obesity. this also effects the appearance of the cat, giving the fur a matted, dirty look.
the best thing for your cat would be raw meat.
