Description Hey, I think I've seen this before...

[link]

Decided to draw this picture on Art Academy, if only to confirm that it looks better than pictures drawn on Flipnote. (Not that it wasn't obvious anyway...)

But the limitations of Flipnote do have their charm.

BTW, I have not just taken the most perfect camera shot ever. I got the downloaded version of Art Academy which allows for SD Card support.

If I didn't get the retail copy for 10 quid, I'd feel kinda ripped off...

EDIT: I'd just like to point out that this comparison is only about still pictures on each of these programs.
I'm not trying to say that Art Academy is better than Flipnote Studio, because they are quite different.
When it comes to animations, Flipnote wins hands down.

Proper colouring is DEFINATLY better than Flipnotes...

...Maybe I should do something like that when my computer gets fixed...

Also, I was planning on making an 'Ultimate Team' for each region (consisting of only standards - no legends, but pseudo legends like Metagross are allowed), and I was wondering if you could come up with a good moveset for my Hydreigon. It's definately having Dark Pulse & Draco Meteor (methinks it should have Choice Specs, personally), but I'm not sure of the others.

It's going to be teamed with a Ferrothorn, Volcarona, Jellicent, Eelektross and Swoobat.

Thanks.

I reccommend Flamethrower/Fire Blast and Surf.

That would cover a lot of types.

Thanks. I've just gone over the move sets I was thinking of using, and I've managed to cover every type except for a Ground move, but then again there's none which can withstand the other moves too easily.

Hopefully the team will be made in good time. Hey, you may have actually met your match.

If you accept, I might be free around 11:05am, I've asked to challenge Sofiz beforehand, however.

Okay, but you can use your 'standard' team, you're not just set to Unova, okay? And I don't want to see a 'Beat Up-Justified-Terrakion-Rock Slide' cobo, okay? I've had enough of those on Wi-Fi.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Glen-i In reply to L0RDR0B [2011-04-15 16:46:48 +0000 UTC]

Me? Use Terrakion? Never gonna happen. Terrakion isn't cool.

I've got more chance of using a Heatmor on you...

After all, Heatmor is rad!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

L0RDR0B In reply to Glen-i [2011-04-15 17:07:05 +0000 UTC]

I don't understand why people spam common tactics like 'Dark Void Smergle' or 'Beat Up Justice' on Wi-Fi. Isn't the whole point of PokΓ©mon to train them to become the best, rather than using Magikarp ideas that are technically cheating?

Hey, I've got an idea (it probably won't work, but I might as well try). How about a Double Battle where we each choose one decent PokΓ©mon (so no Metapods and other weaker ones) for us and our opponent? You like?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Glen-i In reply to L0RDR0B [2011-04-15 20:01:33 +0000 UTC]

Depends on what you classify as "Decent"

My clarification on decent is based on looks...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

L0RDR0B In reply to Glen-i [2011-04-15 20:07:45 +0000 UTC]

Okay, what I classify as decent is (generally) power, and then I pick the best. However, I will often pick cooler ones over the more powerful ones if I feel they can still get the job done (hence why the Shadow Squad, which contains quite a few pre-evos, is still pretty powerful).

If you like the idea, then if we do battle like that, I choose that you pick a Spiritomb, simply because of its uncoolness and stupidity.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Glen-i In reply to L0RDR0B [2011-04-15 22:00:02 +0000 UTC]

Damn you! I hate Spiritomb, I don't have one high enough level for a fight.

...Yet...

If you're going to be like that...
I want you to use Froslass.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

L0RDR0B In reply to Glen-i [2011-04-16 08:35:44 +0000 UTC]

In that case, we'll just make it a Flat Battle...

...Perhaps I shouldn't have been so harsh, because no everyone's going to think that I actually LIKE the ICe Nation...

...Still, it could be a bit of a Star-War-ish take on it, but I don't see how that works...

...Lemme guess, you've picking Charizard?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Glen-i In reply to L0RDR0B [2011-04-16 14:27:56 +0000 UTC]

I'll still have to train it to Lv 50.

Shouldn't take too long.

So is it only 2 Pokemon on the whole team? Just making sure.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

L0RDR0B In reply to Glen-i [2011-04-16 15:08:08 +0000 UTC]

Erm, okay. I guess we could do that, or we could take 5 others, and then pick out of those. But it's only a 2-on-2, so you can only pick one.

I've just got to firstly get my Froslass off of my Diamond, so if we're doing to today, let's say at 5? You okay with that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Glen-i In reply to L0RDR0B [2011-04-16 15:11:40 +0000 UTC]

No, I won't be ready by then.

Tomorrow at 5 would be great!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

L0RDR0B In reply to Glen-i [2011-04-16 15:18:52 +0000 UTC]

Agreed, but no items are allowed on your Spiritomb to the Froslass, okay?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Glen-i In reply to L0RDR0B [2011-04-16 17:12:12 +0000 UTC]

I think you meant "or the Froslass..."

Items are OK for the other PokΓ©mon though, right?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

L0RDR0B In reply to Glen-i [2011-04-16 17:18:41 +0000 UTC]

Well, all of the ones I've encountered (including J+'s PokΓ©Form on a bad day) generally mean trouble, so that was wise of you for correcting that, thanks. If you hadn't, I'd have been torn to shreds and freeze-thawed to death.

Considering that I don't have the best of weapons, we can allow items, but I don't really have the best of them. So yes.

This can't be better. heres the unbeatable difference:
Art Academy can not make animations with/without sound!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Glen-i In reply to Zeminio [2011-03-23 09:59:23 +0000 UTC]

That's an advantage, but I still love the detail Art Academy has.

Now if only there was a way to combine the two into one awesome animating tool on the DSi...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zeminio In reply to Glen-i [2011-03-24 09:43:19 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking, and yes, you are right of it being an advantage...

Art Academy
Good: Great Art, (DSiWARE) upload to Facebook.
Bad: Cannot do Animations, Small Screen, (DSi/DSiWARE) chances of bad photo rendering. Game Card data cannot be shared.
Flipnote Hatena:
Good: Use of 2 colours and shading skills, can create still/animation, can record sounds from mic/DSiSOUND, Can be shared.
Bad: Flipnotes can be reported/flagged or stolen, Can only hold certain amount of memory, Successful flips can contain mature audiences!

so, sorry for saying you're wrong! but these are the differences!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Glen-i In reply to Zeminio [2011-03-24 11:53:58 +0000 UTC]

Chance of bad photo rendering? I've not heard anything about this...
You couldn't elaborate on that a bit more, could you?

I feel like some of the points you made are valid, while others need a bit of tweaking. Sorry for this being so long...

I'll start with the good points on Art Academy.
"Great Art": It's the biggest plus, I totally agree with you here.
"Upload to facebook": While it's ridiculously easy to upload pics to facebook from the DSi, there's an option to embed a flipnote on to Facebook on the Hatena Website, so it doesn't really matter.

I just want to add...
"More useful tools": The zoom and grid function are really helpful. Flipnote Studio would benefit if it had these.
"References": I suck at drawing from memory, so having a reference picture on the top screen is a plus for me.
"A massive amount of colours and shades": If you know what kind of colour you're going for, you could probably mix it. This may be what you meant by "Great Art", but I'm just throwing it out there.
"More realistic feel": It's a small thing, I admit, but the pencil has an impressive feel to it.
"Lessons": This is brilliant for beginners. The lessons are surprisingly helpful on learning about shading and pencil techniques.
"Able to use on any DS": Of course, this only applies to the retail version. It doesn't really matter to me, but I know a few people who still use the original DS.

Now I'll move on to bad points:
"Cannot do Animations": Can't argue with that, that would be dumb of me.
"Small Screen": Hang on, doesn't Flipnote suffer from the same problem? It's not really a difference...
"Chances of bad photo rendering": I've not heard anything about this, I'll just take your word for it.
"Game card data cannot be shared": Not a problem if you get the DSiWare one, beacause you just use the SD Card. But the retail version really suffers from this.

I'd like to add...
"Cost": Flipnote Studio is free, Art Academy is not.
"Only 3 slots for works in progress": And it's only one in the DSiware version. Compared to Flipnote, which can have an infinite amount of WIP flipnotes, (provided you have space on an SD Card/System Memory) it's quite noticeable...

Flipnote Hatena good points:
"Use of 2 colours and shading skills": Compared to Art Academy, that's really piddly. It's bordering on pathetic. However, the fact that it's simple can be a plus, because it's more accessible.
"Can create still/animation": This is why I love flipnote! Easily it's biggest plus!
"Can record sounds from mic/DSiSound": Yep, agree with you here too, although I can see why it's not in Art Academy.
"Can be shared": If you have the DSiWare Art Academy, this doesn't really count as a difference...

I'm going to add:
"Dedicated Website": And it's quite well run too! It's an easy way to get other people's opinions on your work, provided you get it noticed.
"Online features": Yeah, it's obvious, but being able to download other people's flipnotes all on the DSi is pretty awesome!

Bad points:
"Flipnotes can be reported/flagged or stolen": Agreed. It's my biggest gripe, and it happens far too often if you don't lock your work.
"Can only hold a certain amount of memory": This always baffled me. But if you have an SD card, this problem vanishes.
"Successful flips can contain mature audiences": Huh? That sentence came out a bit odd... I think I get what you mean though. However, I just think this is down to creators. You can't really blame the software for what you do with it. Technically, you could do the same kind of thing with Art Academy. But best not think about that too much...
I also think that the "Use of 2 colours and shading skills" point should be put here, I don't need to explain why again.

I think that covers everything. Sheesh, that was long. But I would just like to point out that I really enjoy using both of these applications.
There are just moments when I wish some features in Art Academy were in Flipnote Studio. (Mostly the zoom function)
