Description
Thie was a self motivating test to see how far I could push myself In terms of not only drawing but breaking the barrier of keeping my drawings 11x 14 and smaller. This drawing took me 6 months to do and approximately 58 hours. This was completed my freshman year of college and is still one of my favorites. I didnt do this peice to show the world that i can draw...I did this piece to show myself that there are no boundaries to my ability. I could never sell this piece because it's the foundation for many to come...however upon my ideas instead.Related content

That's just it: there is no style. It's just a carbon copy in pencil of a pre-existing picture. Deal with it. Stop defending it. I'm not putting it down; I'm putting it in the correct light.

Style is more than linework and composition. If you look up any definition of "style" it includes everything. What you are implying is that since there is no style and since it is simply a carbon copy of a photograph (millions of amazing artists draw from photo references by the way), that if you attempted the same picture it would turn out looking just as amazing. This is not the case. You have no work to show for yourself, and so I guess it would turn out much like a blindfolded toddler attempting to recreate Renaissance art with a stick in a sandbox. Perhaps if you showed an inkling of artistic ability, people would not be so in-your-face about discrediting someone else's work. It is my experience that people who cannot practice what they preach have little idea what they are talking about.

ok so your not making sense... How is (even a carbon copy) a pencil re-creation a style. Why does it bother you so much that I'm defending a drawing that I think deserves defending. Your just a random person who jumped into a pre-existing argument, that was for the most part over so don't tell me to stop defending it when your the reason I'm still defending it.

Thank god someone else has their head on their shoulders. I get so pissed off when people vent their shit on a DD like this. I suggested it because it's an amazing piece of work, and suddenly because it was referenced it's not worthy of a DD, or isn't impressive, or took no talent. Yet, you look at the people that are saying these things, and they have mediocre anime art, or no art at all in their gallery. People need to learn when to shut up and use their time to improve their own drawing instead of bringing other people down. Thanks bud.

I think you should read comments better. I never said the picture is bad but you seem to think I have. Just read the comment over and stop taking offence to something which isn't offencive.

Escuse my terms, since I'm not an artist, but a writer; I'd like to express my oppinion of your bad atmoshpere expressing toward the artist and his work...
Do you have a certain reason for putting him down? Yes, you think he's a bit pompous, but when did you think that he was showing off to the world? He wanted to push himself out of his boundaries that have enclosed him. I've always wanted to do that, but did I ever think that it could happen? What about you? Have you ever wanted to achieve something of yourself? Ever?
Your oppinion is really taking a toll on my thoughts, explain if you would please.

SDBR39952 thanks for being the only one with the brains to realise I wasn't slating his work, I was just leaving a bit of criticism but come on guys. Yes it's a good picture (which i did mention) but the the main problem i had was with another comment made not the artist work. Everyone chill out! I'm sorry if there was offence taken but its citicism. If you cant take it dont let people leave comments

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and i don't have to explain myself for giving one. I wouldnt take offence to someone giving an opinion on my work unless it was truly meant to annoy me which my comments were not. You're reading it wrongly. Try reading it with a positive voice and it changes the ways it sounds

ShadowAndreas69 is right, this is basically a copy of another artist's depiction of Doctor Octavius. And while what you S1h4d0w say is true, that it is a copy that not everyone could do, it is still a copy. Besides, you don't even know the methods that glennuwine used. The fact that glennuwine failed to mention that he used a reference might indicate that he used less than honorable methods to complete this drawing. And then, his skill would not lie in drawing, but tracing.

Okay then, thank you for chewing at me. I needed a highlight in my mood. Call me irriational, but why would he spend six months tracing? 58 hours is a long time. And sometimes, the world's not as full of deception as we think it may be.

It doesn't matter what we think or feel. Truth is, that we don't know what methods he used. He's a good artist, but his picture is a little too close to perfection for me. Besides, if you look at the original and his take on it, you can see some obvious mistakes on his part. Those mistakes are him misunderstanding the way doc ock flows, and comes off as a distortion or deformity. Either way, there would be a point to copying something like that for so long a time. First, because it helps you improve both at drawing in general and on general understanding of structures (e.g., dock ock's body and metal arm thingies). Second, because you can say "yeah i drew it, aren't I awesome. but still modest, ya know."

(I know this is an old conversation, but I feel the need to intercede anyway) Normally I do not engage in fruitless discussions regarding artists and their arguing about the validity of their work, but I was somewhat taken back by your comments. You say that the artist could have used tracing to achieve this effect. True for the outline, but for the shading? Tracing works up to a point, but there comes a level of detail that simply cannot be accurately reproduced just by tracing. Unarguably, the level of skill which went into just the shading is spot-on. The lighting is infinitely accurate, the artist uses multiple shading techniques to distinguish between different textures and materials, and tops it all off with incredible detail. you try shading the nitty-gritty of wires for hours and then have someone declare that your entire picture is fraud because you traced an outline of a figure (which we have no evidence of anyway). All in all, anyone with an IQ larger than that of, say, a pebble would have to agree that your argument is nothing more than the time-squandering raving of a sad person with no talent to show for himself and who wishes to condemn another deviant because he shows more talent and technical ability than you could even hope to achieve. It is members like you who degrade the purpose of dA: to provide constructive support and feedback to fellow artists. Please stop wasting the time of people like me who have much more constructive things to do than write scathing retorts to idiots.

SDBR39952 In reply to Ethdios [2008-01-28 03:22:48 +0000 UTC]
No, if he was indeed tracing it then the type of mistakes he made would still be there. For a comparison shows that the overall outline remains the same, however the mistake is in what is inside. As in the odd shape of the top left tentacle as it twists to look back at you, or the thickening of the bottom right tentacle.

*face-palm* God. I'll stop commenting my oppinion, because I'm about to get irrational and express myself in a very childish manner, which I don't think would be good on my behalf, or yours for that manner because me bitching at the top of my lungs for the next 5 paragraphs is not going to do anything about it. Give me a few months... I could probably come up with a good argument and a reason worth. I'm not good with arguments. I tend to get irrational and ill-considerate when it comes to one. I can put up one hell of a fight, just because I'm stubborn as hell-fire, but I can't back it up.

Why not we both disagree about something useful, like 'which political canidate do we like?' you know, something like that. I would not like to dwell on the matter that I've lost our battle of argument, I have other matters to attend to, like learning American Sign Language as fast as I can so I can 'speak' with adisabled school peer....

Well, I only mention that because so many people feel talent is something they have or they don't and they feel if they don't have it, they can't draw and they then never even try to get better. I was just trying to encourage more than just relying on simple talent in order to get better.
