Description
Thie was a self motivating test to see how far I could push myself In terms of not only drawing but breaking the barrier of keeping my drawings 11x 14 and smaller. This drawing took me 6 months to do and approximately 58 hours. This was completed my freshman year of college and is still one of my favorites. I didnt do this peice to show the world that i can draw...I did this piece to show myself that there are no boundaries to my ability. I could never sell this piece because it's the foundation for many to come...however upon my ideas instead.Related content

i'll try. I did this my freshman year and i was only taking 12 credits so i hhad alot of free time. and i did this to test myself. But now I hav too much homework to do something like this again. An drawing assignment given to me will be done in this style bu just not as much detail and technicality. That drawing is 22x 30.

Gorgeously detailed and stylized. You really did justice to the character. Wondefully complex and exquisite. The shading and contrast are superb. Great realism.

Ok... what? did justice to the character? its a drawing of photograph which already existed. I've seen this picture of Doc Oc many a time especially on poster's for SpiderMan 2 so to be honest he didn't do any sort of justice at all. He just drew a picture of the photo that did justice to the character

the bottom of the coat is different. there are subtle differences that show it wouldn't be photoshopped. Different shaped wrinkles in the coat towards the bottom.

List of things I like to do before declaring the possibility that someone cheated a piece of work:
1: Shut my mouth
2: Engage my brain
3: Investigate the rest of their gallery to decide if there is evidence to support or contradict that thought.
This artist has plenty in their gallery, in multiple mediums, to show they have a talent for realism and portraits, and that this much time invested into a work could indeed yield these results.
It is 100% rude and insulting to even dare comment in such a manner on someone's work without the knowledge to make such a claim. You rip apart the talent, time, and effort spent on the artwork to pieces with such an uninformed comment. To essentially say "it's so good it can't be real, u r teh cheater" is degrading to an artist who has spent over two days of their life in hours working on something, as well as putting a seed of doubt into the mind of anyone viewing this work and others. It damages their self confidence and their reputation.
Everyone is absolutely entitled to their own opinion, but those need to be educated, informed opinions, otherwise it's just some fool running their mouth, and there are certainly enough of those individuals on the net already.

Just because you can only pull off anime lineart and color in crayolas doesn't mean someone else isn't capable of doing something like this. Grow up.

...your rationale for him not arguing back is that you're sixteen? excuse me? Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, and quite frankly, I can see where you're coming from. HOWEVER. You said you wouldn't respond; if you hadn't, you would have had a lot more respect, because you would have shown that you were mature enough to state your opinion and then leave it before it got out of hand. You did, and then your rationale makes his "grow up" statement pretty accurate to the situation.
As for Rahll, he suggested this based on what the author said, and considering we have no evidence opposing the author's statement, we have to assume it's true. Rahll acted on that. He knows this guy, which is how he found the piece; he suggested it, because assuming the author really did this, reference or not, the technical aspect of reproducing the textures is mind-blowing. He did not need to respond to you, however, and that's where he's wrong.
Just my two cents on the matter.

Yeah I agree with RagingGryphon. I seriously almost laughed to myself when you not only responded, but responded and defended yourself by making rahll out to be someone bullying a 16 year old.
He wasn't bullying he was simply stating that he went to school with the artist, in a calm non-threatening manner. Just because someone says something that makes you appear wrong don't try to make them out to be the bad guy.

BeachlessHippo In reply to ShadowedImages [2008-01-27 19:23:06 +0000 UTC]
Yeah? your point? He re-created a portrait of him, Isn't capturing a moment at which the characters form and expression and intimidation are exactly what they should be doing justice to the character? How about spending months to make sure every element of the character is perfect down to the slightest detail... isn't that doing the character justice?
So he used a picture for reference, what that really means is he looked at something and drew it. You know that most if not all the really great artists (except for surrealists) painted something they saw. If the mona lisa (not sure about the spelling on that one) was painted after a real woman sitting there would that not do her justice because he didn't invent some weird unique thing for her to be doing, but in fact just drew her sitting there as still as she could be.
Maybe the reason you've seen that picture so much is because THAT PICTURE DOES JUSTICE TO THE CHARACTER.
Maybe if it were a naruto picture he would of liked it. Because drawing a character that millions have drawn before do it justice. Here you are criticizing the picture when all of your work looks inspired by naruto. You cant go around saying that the artists piece doesn't do justice to a character when neither does any of your pictures.
Draw me a picture of the sasuke that takes you more then an hour and a half; and make it embody everything that character is in a magnificent piece of art that makes me respect you as an artist, and then you can talk.

Whats you're problem? I was just giving a little crit on someone else's comment not his work. I left a comment saying that it's a very good drawing. And about Naruto there are only two pics of naruto in my gallery so i dunno why u seem to think that naruto is the best thing thats ever happened to me. Artists always get criticism and they jst have to handle it. Stop being so annoyed over something so small

No but you acted as if your were offended that the author said his drawing did justice to the picture, stating that "he didn't do any sort of justice at all."
See thats the part that pissed me off.
Especially when the picture definetly did do justice to the character. Its amazing; and I dont see why someone who hasnt managed to do "justice" to any of his own pictures gets off telling a very good artist who did an incredible piece that he didnt do justice to his.
Also im sick of saying justice

Take a chill pill. The original artist was the one that created such an image, not someone that copied it like down like that. Don't use fancy words to make yourself seem right. Truth is, no matter how painstaking his work was, it is still a carbon copy of another artist. Analyzing another artist's work will help him in the future, but he shouldn't take credit like that (if he even is). Also, I doubt the Mona Lisa was simply painted as it was or with no direction from the artist.

BeachlessHippo In reply to SDBR39952 [2008-01-29 12:48:40 +0000 UTC]
waaa? No the mona lisa was probably a painting of a girl sitting there, so its only different from paining from a picture in the sence another artist created that portrait. What I was arguing is the fact that because it was drawn from a still dosent make it any less great. Of course I wasnt saying that it was an original masterpeice what I was saying is that his rendition of the picture does justice to it. So before you try and defend your point you should probably know what I was stating in mine.
And also just because I have an eloquent way of typing down my thoughts dosent mean I'm trying to sugar coat what i say to make myself right, its just how I choose to display my reasoning.
If I said instead "Nuh uh, your wrong, suck it" would you even of bothered to give me your thoughts back?

Yes, if only to give you my opinion before writing you off as another moron. Also, I know that's what you were trying to say. But the artist merely copied it down as well he could, so if anyone did justice to anything it is the original person who did this picture.
