Description
Okay, this news is over two years old, but I only found out about it recently. Back in October 1999, Archie published Sonic Super Special #11, featuring the short story "Ascension" in which Sally undresses and merges with the Source of All to uncover her destiny like her father before her. When this story was reprinted in May 2012 in Sonic Select #5, Archie had taken a firmer stance on Sally's nudity and edited the pages so that she's wearing her vest. In fact, the vest is still coloured blue in the sepia panels as if to say, "Yes! She's got her vest on, readers!"I discovered this by accident when I came across Sonic Select #5 in a comic shop and immediately spotted the change. My initial reaction was incredulous. Was this really necessary? It's not as if the vest really covers up Sally, but for some reason Archie believes this small item of clothing makes the comic more kid-friendly. I guess you could say this was a precursor to Sally's more conservative redesign after "Worlds Collide". So what do you think? Do you agree that the edit was for the best, or do you prefer the uncut version of "Ascension"? You can see a collage of the changes below.
Also, I've decided to share the inked version in case anyone wants to get some colouring practice with this. Feel free to have a go!
(I wonder if drawing Elias means I'll be sued...)

That's what I mean. She'd just be a cartoon animal without clothes. The existence of the vest without the boots to accompany it, makes it obvious that something's missing.
It's like if she was wearing a Bikini bottom but no top. It would actually seem weirder than just wearing nothing.

Mobians have really weird standards, given the males let it all out there while the females wear clothes.

I honestly had no problems with the vest thing since I grew up with Sonic Satam. And I didn't find it weird that she was only wearing boots in season one since I was still just a kid at the time and didn't know much about tomboyish stuff since I didn't really care about that. But then I got older and started to get curious when I compared notes between Season One and Two.
(Also, I don't think Penders cares at this point if fans use "his" characters since most of them don't credit him out of spite anyway.)

Not really, considering that Sonic Satam was a kids show.

Service...I'm not OPPOSED to it, but I do fear it coloring people's opinions...however, censorship of most varieties offends me, so the vest thing seems like an unnecessary overreaction to the aforementioned colored opinions.

Yeah, before Ian Flynn decided to start having Fiona wear a form fitting bodysuit then decided to switch to a black top, fingerless gloves, black pants and combat boot.

Sally: I don't know. The fluid seems kind of warm and... and... *sniff, sniff* ...and why does it smell like pee?
Elias: ...Huh?
Sally: Why. Does the Source. Smell like pee?
Elias: β¦β¦β¦β¦β¦β¦.No it doesn't. Just... Do what you need to do. I'll be here with your skimpy clothes.
Sally: My WHAT clothes???
Elias: I'll be here with your Skippy clothes.

Nice job!
Forget poorly edited, the edits in the reprints don't even make narrative thematic sense. Β Also, they didn't give her clothes in the first dozen and so issues. Β Why was this an issue? Β XD

It was a really unessacary change. But I like Sally's modern day design better because she looks more like a leader who's ready for action. I didn't really get that much when she's just wearing her vest.

Oh wow. I feel like things probably got weird once Sega had all the females in the games wear at least shirts. Plus some of the comic artists gave her breasts. Though if you think about it, the vest doesn't make much of a difference either. Idk.Β

In the beginning, she didn't have a vest at all. She just wore boots. She started wearing the vest in the first 48-page special "In Your Face".

I think comic artists need to decide whether they are drawing comic panels for all ages, or a series of pinups.

Agreed. Cartoon animals shouldn't need full human covering, but some pictures make them seem naked by detailing way too much (curves, bellybutton, etc). It also makes innocent pictures seem guilty because people then read too much into them

Thankfully, I have the original Sonic Super Special #11 comic issue.
Because I don't know much about or follow into whatever the Archie Sonic comic crew does nowadays.
