Description
Okay, this news is over two years old, but I only found out about it recently. Back in October 1999, Archie published Sonic Super Special #11, featuring the short story "Ascension" in which Sally undresses and merges with the Source of All to uncover her destiny like her father before her. When this story was reprinted in May 2012 in Sonic Select #5, Archie had taken a firmer stance on Sally's nudity and edited the pages so that she's wearing her vest. In fact, the vest is still coloured blue in the sepia panels as if to say, "Yes! She's got her vest on, readers!"I discovered this by accident when I came across Sonic Select #5 in a comic shop and immediately spotted the change. My initial reaction was incredulous. Was this really necessary? It's not as if the vest really covers up Sally, but for some reason Archie believes this small item of clothing makes the comic more kid-friendly. I guess you could say this was a precursor to Sally's more conservative redesign after "Worlds Collide". So what do you think? Do you agree that the edit was for the best, or do you prefer the uncut version of "Ascension"? You can see a collage of the changes below.
Also, I've decided to share the inked version in case anyone wants to get some colouring practice with this. Feel free to have a go!
(I wonder if drawing Elias means I'll be sued...)

Good grief. She's a freakin cartoon animal! Are we really getting more prudish as time goes one? Β This is why we can't have nice things because sick people draw inappropriate sonic fan art and parents have to worry about their kids accidentally stumbling on that crap. Β Why are animals being more sexualized as time goes on why? Β Next thing you know they'll make pooh bear wear pants too.

Interestingly, this sort of censorship was the very reason why she got the iconic vest in the first place, during SatAM's 2nd season.
Apparently, people were still complaining way back then.

What makes you so sure of that? It's not as if there was any Internet back then for DiC to read fan feedback. Maybe they just included the vest for aesthetic reasons.

They received them through the mail. It's how most broadcast networks kept in touch with their viewers back then, before the internet made things easier.
I recall the information coming from a staff-member who worked on SatAM. The change was authorized due to either viewership complaints or (more likely) focus-group mandates.

Proof or it didn't happen. Besides, what did the vest accomplish? It's as revealing then as it is in this submission, so it's pointless to include it on Sally. It seems more likely that it's just a design change.

There's no fox in Elias' heritage. King Max is a squirrel while Queen Alicia is a chipmunk. Sally has inherited more from her mother while Elias inherited more from his father, hence the longer tail.

Maximillian design from SatAM is closer to a Fox, on the comics they fixed this.

So since people want to complain about her being "naked" and let Sonic and the rest of the guys get away with it just because they're guys, why aren't any of them complaining about Fifi la Fume from Tiny Toons or Slappy Squirrel from Animaniacs? They're both females and they walk around with no clothes on.

They didn't complain about Slappy Squirrel, but they certainly complained about the oversexualized Minverva Mink, hence her restricted appearances.

Yeah. I still remember. Of course, unlike Mrs. Mink, Ms. Acorn on the other hand hasn't been sexualized in anything outside of furry porn on the Internet.

Yeah, I honestly do not know anything about Minverva Mink. That very unfortunate for that character. At least Sally isn't too oversexualized like the Mink is.

I sort of do and don't understand Archie Comics stance on this matter. The part I do understand is the fact it is sorta inappropriate to see something that closely resembles a human being being naked without clothes on and that could lead very young children down a not-so-pleasant road, so good thinking on Archie for that part. But the part that I don't understand is the fact that for people in the more mature audience for people 13 and up (preferably 16 and up because that's how old I am) will easily be able to understand why she has minimal clothing on because the fur that she is covered in mainly IS HER CLOTHING and doesn't need to be censored for mature audiences, therefore Archie Comics placing censorship on the scenes where Sally has no clothing on is pretty much redundant or unnecessary for people that are older and can comprehend why she is naked like so. The best decision for Archie Comics would be for them to release 2 (or maybe 3 different versions of certain comic issues depending on how old you are) and have them directed towards specific age groups of people and also saying content warnings and age restrictions for people of certain ages. Just a very meticulous thought I had in mind when I saw this. I hope you understand my thoughts. Good day.

Interesting idea. And what happens when all the youngin's ignore the sanitized comic in favour of the 'big kids' version with all the nudity, swearing and drug abuse?

The21stCenturyGamer In reply to glitcher [2016-09-18 04:40:54 +0000 UTC]
That would be entirely up to the kid's parents. And why did have to put "swearing and drug" in there? There is not any of that in the Sonic the Hedgehog comics.

That's both hilarious and a sad reminder of how idiotic media censorship is that showing a 'naked animal' is somehow horribly indecent but showing all manner of lewd/crude garbage with live human characters is just peachy. Β
I had to contend with similar amounts of ridiculous censorship when Yu-Gi-Oh started showing in America. A hint from a Japanese fan led me to a site showing all the differences between his version and mind, and what they censored was so stupid it defied belief. For one easy example, they made a card-character who wields a giant needle go from a realistic hospital needle to a giant cartoony rocket-thing...because apparently showing a realistic needle was a no-no. The cards got a similar treatment.

It kinda annoys me when people complain about Sally being "nude." She's a furry. An anthropromorphic chipmunk. A lot of the males do not wear clothing that covers where their privates would be, and yet people complain about a female doing the same. I mean it's not like they drew her with her fucking nipples and vagina showing. :/ it's ridiculous. They should just be glad they gave her any clothes at all. They could draw them all without any clothing period, and people would just have to deal with it. Cuz it's an anthropromorphic animal. Not a naked human.Β

Okay, I think censorship is kinda dumb in general, but I get that they got complaints from parents originally, the primary goal of these reprints isΒ to make money, yadda yadda yadda...
...but did they really have to be so clumsyΒ about the coloring, which should've been easy to make match the original scenes? Β I mean yeah, I know some poor guy/gal/person/people probably did this with not enough time, for not enough pay, on not enough coffee, but surely they should have noticed that the flashback panels were in sepia and tried to match that?

We don't even know that Archie got complaints from anyone. It strikes me more that the editor got cold feet and wanted to sanitize the scene as much as possible.

Either Sally puts on some clothes or the other female characters need to be shown without clothes, because saying that Sally's fur keeps her from being obscene but [insert name of female character here]'s fur doesn't do the same for them is a double standard and completely unfair to the otherΒ Mobian girls.Β

I'm just saying the double standard bothers me. Someone draws Amy Rose without her clothes and they get in trouble yet they draw Sally without her jacket and it's okay? I just don't think that's fair.

CrusaderMaverick In reply to Hawkheart29 [2018-01-04 20:21:45 +0000 UTC]

Hawkheart29 In reply to CrusaderMaverick [2018-01-04 20:26:54 +0000 UTC]
And I'm fine with that, I just don't think it's fair that people are okay with that design "because her fur covers her" but not when someone draws Amy or Rouge or one of the other girls without clothes. They have fur too so logically if Sally's fur is enough to cover her than their fur should be enough to cover them. Do you see what I mean?
