Description
Okay, this news is over two years old, but I only found out about it recently. Back in October 1999, Archie published Sonic Super Special #11, featuring the short story "Ascension" in which Sally undresses and merges with the Source of All to uncover her destiny like her father before her. When this story was reprinted in May 2012 in Sonic Select #5, Archie had taken a firmer stance on Sally's nudity and edited the pages so that she's wearing her vest. In fact, the vest is still coloured blue in the sepia panels as if to say, "Yes! She's got her vest on, readers!"I discovered this by accident when I came across Sonic Select #5 in a comic shop and immediately spotted the change. My initial reaction was incredulous. Was this really necessary? It's not as if the vest really covers up Sally, but for some reason Archie believes this small item of clothing makes the comic more kid-friendly. I guess you could say this was a precursor to Sally's more conservative redesign after "Worlds Collide". So what do you think? Do you agree that the edit was for the best, or do you prefer the uncut version of "Ascension"? You can see a collage of the changes below.
Also, I've decided to share the inked version in case anyone wants to get some colouring practice with this. Feel free to have a go!
(I wonder if drawing Elias means I'll be sued...)

So I guess Tails will have to wear shorts for 'sensitivity issues' regarding small children.
Reminds me of the 'Role Models' episode in "Sonic Boom."

Funny how Elias is the one shoving the vest back at Sally when he typically wears a shirt and absolutely nothing below that.

XD Oh gosh maybe if they drew her anatomy like Sonic's and the rest of the actual Sonic-characters instead of so human-like they'd feel less like they had to censor her. Even so I still see no reason as to why she had to be censored at all DX

Fortunately, I found a website that has comic scans of the original, UNEDITED version of this book.
Frankly, I don't get what the big deal is.
unless Sall has visible nipples and genitals, here so-called nudity isn't such a big deal
(and, frankly, a pair of Boots and a Vest is hardly what I consider "properly clothed" her chest and crotch are STILL visible.)
Are people STUPID, or what?!Β

Okay, that's pretty stupid, particularly considering she didn't even have the vest until issue 17. Have they gone back and given her a vest in reprints of issues 1-16? (Although I suppose she does have more human proportions in this story than in the old issues... It still doesn't change the facts that it's clumsily done and that it made more sense for her to take her vest off before getting in the pool.)

I believe post-SGW Sally is more anatomically correct than pre-SGW.
Explains why Sega is insistant she wears full clothing now.

I thought she was more anatomically correct before the reboot, since she had more muscle tone than Sonic.

I mean nipples, genitalia and such, whatever reason girl mobians wear clothes while boys are free not too.
I figure mobian girls wear clothes for two reason: Either they enjoy fashion or have more "distracting qualities" that they feel the need to cover. They probably wear clothing mostly for fashion if genitalia and nipples are just as less visable as the boys.
But Sega were insistant for her to have clothes that actually cover her than before even though she had no visable naughty bits. If she is suppose to be a mobian tomboy then whats more manly for mobians than less clothing? So maybe she simply can't go around in just a jacket-vest and boots no more because she got visable naughty bits now.
I know I am perhaps bullshitting myself over something minor as the change but I always admired that about pre-SGW Sally. She wore what she want and the comics didn't sexualize her for it.

I personally don't mind Sally's redesign, but I found no problems with her old design either. It wasn't like she was drawn for sex appeal to begin with, bit I guess people's minds change with time.
Still, I'm glad you pointed out how ridiculous the censorship was. (I never read the comics, but I did skim through that particular story. The censored version, that is).

No, you probably won't be suedπ. It's funny to look at! But she's got fur so it's not wrong or anything. But, if it keeps the fandom quiet then I guess she should wear clothes.π I love your depiction though. Most of the time I get angry when people talk about how, " Sally is nude" but adding Elias just made it funny!

There is no point to this. Sally is an animal. Do animals wear clothes? No. And she was going in the pool, so, yeah Archie. Yeah they are drawn more human like, but they have fur that covers it, which is why when they first created Sally, they didn't add clothes, and why Sally walks around in the old books without much. They added more clothes to her now I guess because some people were getting upset. Why they were getting upset over animal that's not real I don't know.

Haha, this is the first I've heard about the retcon censorship.Β I can understand Archie's concerns on account of the internet fandom, but it really doesn't make any more sense on whether a humanoid squirrel is completely naked or wearing an open vest with no pants.Β Who goes for a dip with a vest on anyway?
I guess if they wanted to go to the trouble of editing the image, maybe they should have just drawn a complete wetsuit over her?

I find that censoring Sally's chest and not her groin to be confusing. First of all, Valentine did give the characters more human proportions, but he left Sally's chest flat with hardly any hint of breasts.
Personally, I think it's stupid to censor female characters because of breasts. Most mammals, male and female, have them. They are not sex organs. Speaking of which, male genitals are more pronounced than female genitals.
Breasts themselves are not sex organs anyway. They wouldn't be so demonized if our culture wasn't so prudish. It's horrible to treat natural anatomy as shameful.

Well I know I'm late into the thing. I really don't find it was necessary. Like what would make them decide now what was acceptable in the past to be changed to something people did not mind or care for. Sure Sally nudity was exposed; however, I always saw it as she was in the first comics and was represented like Sonic, character with simply footwear. Since in the later comics you saw more details in clothing with female characters, which I don't mind, but taking away a major appearance of a main character is another. Sally has been through so many stages, but this one completely changed her appearance. You don't see the, bed eyes, (top part of eye is shown) which kind of made her more appealing. Not trying to sound like a furry, but changing the eye structure of a character would throw many individuals off since they are widely opened like Amy. Her hair also seem a bit shorter, it's like they tried really hard to make her platonic to where it hurts. I don't mind the new design, but it feels like an entirely new character in appearance and it makes me feel mix when I see her in the comics now. Especially now since the Freedom Fighters are playing a more reminiscing role of thinking of the past. Sally when she cried I felt for her but the new design didn't go with it to me to be honest.Β

I'll be honest. Sally acorn's not a human and most people don't find it offensive to put a crossbreed of a woodland creature with no clothes on in it so no one really cares rather she wears clothes or not. It wouldn't be offensive unless of course she's full human.

While I do the censoring silly on one hand, I kinda understand why they did it since she had a more womanly figure and Archie didn't want to take any risks. But,Β they should've made the vest the same sepia tone as the rest of the panels since it really stands out.
As for your pic, Elias covering his eyes and looking away as he handed his sister the vestis just cute. Like the fact that she looks so confused that he did that.

I always wondered about that. Why do male cartoon animals not have to wear pants when women have to wear dresses and shite? Even with the most recent update to sonic's look, all he got was a stupid scooby doo ascot and some weird bandages for no reason
(off topic, but btw the new sonic is terrible, why is knuckles suddenly twice as big and retarded? wasn't he some sort of guardian of the master emerald with a dark backstory of ancient civilizations crumbling and stuff?)
