Description Okay, this news is over two years old, but I only found out about it recently. Back in October 1999, Archie published Sonic Super Special #11, featuring the short story "Ascension" in which Sally undresses and merges with the Source of All to uncover her destiny like her father before her. When this story was reprinted in May 2012 in Sonic Select #5, Archie had taken a firmer stance on Sally's nudity and edited the pages so that she's wearing her vest. In fact, the vest is still coloured blue in the sepia panels as if to say, "Yes! She's got her vest on, readers!"

I discovered this by accident when I came across Sonic Select #5 in a comic shop and immediately spotted the change. My initial reaction was incredulous. Was this really necessary? It's not as if the vest really covers up Sally, but for some reason Archie believes this small item of clothing makes the comic more kid-friendly. I guess you could say this was a precursor to Sally's more conservative redesign after "Worlds Collide". So what do you think? Do you agree that the edit was for the best, or do you prefer the uncut version of "Ascension"? You can see a collage of the changes below.

Also, I've decided to share the inked version in case anyone wants to get some colouring practice with this. Feel free to have a go!

(I wonder if drawing Elias means I'll be sued...)

It's a cartoon chipmunk. Archie is being ridiculous. Her being "nude" during this scene make more sense than her having clothes.

Man am I glad I still have the original. While I wasn't aware of the later censorship (and I certainly wasn't surprised by it), the main thing I remember about the story was the guest artwork by Jim Valentino. The fact that he ended up drawing Sally and Elias with near-human proportions helped convince me that letting spandex-and-steroid superhero artists try and draw Sonic and company (who are furries) is a really bad idea.

That's odd. When you reviewed that issue, you gave Jim Valentino's art a rather glowing score of 8/10.

When I said that the main thing I remembered about it was the artwork, that wasn't necessarily a 10-out-of-10 compliment. It was professional-grade work but still was all wrong for a furry book. And art is the weakest link for me when evaluating comics; I'm all about the story.

actually the fact that old Sally design is "half-naked" isnt useful anymore XD why? i was reading information about Sticks of Sonic Boom and there is a policy that states that the female sonic characters standards are to not have underwear (that applies for mobians because i dont think they could have so many perversion if they leave the human characters such as Elise without underwear but who knows?) so dressed characters such as Amy and Rouge have this standards so the same goes to Sally old design.

Not really. They're animals. There's no sexual connotations involved. There are even African human tribes who are basically naked and we don't admonish them for not having clothes, because their culture doesn't have the "naked = sexual" stigma the Western world seems to have. Also, back in the 90's and earlier, anthros could go about sans clothes without people getting their underwear in a knot over it. Fifi Le Fume from Tiny Toons, for instance, was an amorous skunkette, who served as pupil under mentor Pepe Le Pew, and despite being a girl, she was the only Toonette (the others being Babs Bunny and Shirley Le Loon) to typically forgo clothes. It didn't help that Kath Soucie (who voiced Sally Acorn and N.I.C.O.L.E on SatAM) voiced her using a sultry Frenglish (French+English) accent, nor the fact that, as Pepe's pupil, Fifi chased boys and men in the same manner that Pepe chased cat Penelope. Oddly enough, it was neat freak Hampton J. Pig who didn't mind Fifi's natural odor and ended up being her canon boyfriend in the show (after episodes showing Fifi chasing after Furball and Calamity Coyote, the respective pupils of Sylvester and Will E. Coyote), per the "Prom-ise Her Anything" episode. To this day, some Muppets go without articles of clothing (for example, Kermit the Frog goes about without clothes - unless he's in his "Sesame Street News" news reporter outfit, his sailor suit if he's Muppet Babies [ www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR_hpd… ]-age, or some other outfit befitting the story being told, such as his Captain Smollett outfit from Muppet Treasure Island [ www.youtube.com/watch?v=czkiRL… ] - and the Fraggle Rock Fraggles of both genders go without pants (in the following link, they are singing their theme with with Ben Folds and Anna Kendrick: vid8.photobucket.com/albums/a2… ).

I don't hate sally's new look in Archie comics but I did like the old one too. I think there should be more female characters which are not covered in clothes. I think it's ridiculous because most of the boys are not wearing clothes...
Β Anyway I have seen pictures of people commenting about 'naked' sonic girls but you created this in a totally different way which makes this more eye-catching and interesting! For example, I like the fact that the scene here is related to the comic pages in the background and this also looks funny and awkward! Β The shaping of the comic pages looks epic and the anatomy of the characters looks polished!

Love the pic.

I think censoring Sally with just the vest in this is facepalm-worthy, largely because it doesn't cover much, and so what was the point? And to color the vest blue in the all-sepia-toned panels was just moronic, because it breaks the whole "flashback" thing that sepia generally indicates.

As for Sally's "nudity" in general, I just always assumed that, as an anthropomorphic animal, she had fur. Probably reasonably thick fur compared to the other female Mobians (especially the ones who got their origin in games), thus requiring less clothing. At least, that's my headcanon and I'm sticking to it.

PanicPagoda In reply to ??? [2014-11-21 01:28:41 +0000 UTC]

I noticed that too - I'm glad to see someone addressing it!

"Hey, that fur-covered anthropomorphic animal that normally wears absolutely minimal clothing isn't wearing anything this time! Even though nothing needs to be censored and it'll only look silly on someone entering a pool, let's put her vest on, so ridiculously prudish people uncomfortable with the full female form will be satisfied!"

I think the vest ruins the moment. It's to strong of a color compared to the surroundings, your eyes go right to it instead of what the scene's suppose to be focused on.

If you ask me it makes no sense. I mean, She only wears a vest and boots. Like Hershey, only she wears an ascot too until later comics when she's wearing a full body suit. What difference does it make? They're animals, not people and they don't even have anything to cover. Why make the changes? You don't see them putting any of the guys in clothes.
