Description
Okay, this news is over two years old, but I only found out about it recently. Back in October 1999, Archie published Sonic Super Special #11, featuring the short story "Ascension" in which Sally undresses and merges with the Source of All to uncover her destiny like her father before her. When this story was reprinted in May 2012 in Sonic Select #5, Archie had taken a firmer stance on Sally's nudity and edited the pages so that she's wearing her vest. In fact, the vest is still coloured blue in the sepia panels as if to say, "Yes! She's got her vest on, readers!"I discovered this by accident when I came across Sonic Select #5 in a comic shop and immediately spotted the change. My initial reaction was incredulous. Was this really necessary? It's not as if the vest really covers up Sally, but for some reason Archie believes this small item of clothing makes the comic more kid-friendly. I guess you could say this was a precursor to Sally's more conservative redesign after "Worlds Collide". So what do you think? Do you agree that the edit was for the best, or do you prefer the uncut version of "Ascension"? You can see a collage of the changes below.
Also, I've decided to share the inked version in case anyone wants to get some colouring practice with this. Feel free to have a go!
(I wonder if drawing Elias means I'll be sued...)

God, this is pathetic. If they had just made her a tad bit more animalistic (like in SatAM), this wouldn't even be an issue. But even though she's built like a human here, she's still technically covered up. So, yeah. It's stupid to give her a vests no say she's censored.
love Elias' expression though. XD

Oh, come on. Yeah, she's covered in fur, but actually she was the only naked female in Sonic Satam, as an original universe. Why even draw females clothed (Bunny, Lupe) and leave Sally naked? AND drawing her with such a curly-feminine figure in later Archie comics. Sally's nakedness is still kinda strange, and comparing her to Sonic male characters does not feel right; they have a completely cartoonish-like bodies.

It's true that Sally evolved from a stylised dwarf in the cartoon to a leaner, curvacious figure in Pat Spaz's covers, which was probably the genesis of this whole nudity debacle. Do you think she's oversexualised here?

I guess she was? Kind of? Cause they'd just give her that perfect teen body, instead of trying to work in proper Sega style. I don't mean Archie musn't have their own art-style though, but it's just a bit strange. As if Sal can't be a good character, if she's not attractive humanly-like.

finally some one else noticed this insanity ! i was thinking of doing something like this awhile back but never did ,thank you for doing so ! wow i remember seeing this issue the original one and thinking that this was very bold in doing this and it might be the last time it was done a good story and nicely illustrated my one slight regret is that Spaz did not draw it he did the Julie-Su story in that issue , yeah this was unnecessary and pointless censorship why would she take off her boots and leave her vest on ? she was also not wearing her boots for a brief scene in the sonic in your face special and as for these edited reprints most i think edit the vest on her as well as recolored for the early issues funny how now the female characters are fully clothed and the male characters are more nude makes no sense . sorry for the long reply this is just something that has been on my mind you have done a wonderful illustration !

For me these humanoids don't need any of these clothings. They got FUR as their clothes so why do they even needed one?! They're only NUDE when their Furs shaved or no furs at all; For example, mole-rats. So does shoes. Each of these humanoid animals have their own capabilites. I think the clothings are some kind of accessories that that they wear...I think.

Okay, they are aware the vest does nothing.
1. vest is open so her "breasts" are exposed.
2. She wears no pants, so very "naught bits" are exposed.
This edit literally does nothing... idiots.
'Still damn fine drawn piece.
Great use of color.

This is the first I am hearing of this as well, but I can't say I'm all that surprised that the change was made. When the two versions are laid side by side, I prefer the original version where Sally isn't wearing the vest, and I'll tell you why. From what you tell me of the storyline surrounding these pages, this was a very pivotal moment of character development for Sally Acorn. Denuding Sally of her vest and boots is symbolic, in my opinion, of Sally leaving behind her normal way of living to step forward and fuse her soul with an ethereal power, and so adds to the drama of the scene. Keeping her vest on seems so petty to me, and if it was done to placate a change in sensibilities, it doesn't even make sense -- the vest is mostly open and doesn't stretch below her midriff. In other words the only things the vest covers are her breasts, and those weren't even sharply defined to begin with!
It's like most of the edits that 4kids made to Sonic X when dubbing a version of it in English, and that's exactly why I only watch the original Japanese version.

Don't use that as an excuse to see Sally in the buff, though. If she wants to wear a vest (or whatever else), let her.

I think the vest makes her look MORE naked, because then you notice she has no pants. What madness IS this?
Isn't Sonic strutting around nude, then? Do his balls hang out? No? I don't see the issue here.
You know who else was naked all the time it was Plutoooooo he was naked dog.

Adding the vest was pretty pointless. It barely covers anything, and it's not as if she really had boobs in that issue.
But anyways, the art looks great, as always. How do you draw the cheek fluff? I struggle so hard with that. XD

Really? They censored it? I actually still own the original copy of that issue (I think?) I remember not being bothered by the nudity (if you can even call it that) but instead I wasn't very interested in the story.
I understand why they censored the pages but it doesn't mean I agree with the reasoning behind it. Sally is drawn a little bit more humanoid in that special and therefore more feminine. Maybe not by much, but enough for the editors to be concerned to "censor" it.

It's only a matter of time before Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Tweet Bird are all expected to dress in full outfits.....
Leave it to people to get upset about dumb things that are not actually a problem, and ignore things that are.
Would they ever make Sonic wear a full suit on a regular basis? Heck no! Or tails? Or Knuckles? They are /just/ as nude, if not more so. And if anything, Antoine is now more "nude" then ever before.

I prefer the uncut version, but maybe it's because I'm not over sexualizing Sally. I know some/more maybe are the same--there was nothing wrong with her being with just boots in the beginning and then getting a vest later on. We looked at her and saw an adorable character who could kick butt and gather up a plan in little to no time at all--we didn't look at her and say 'boobs...' or 'she's naked', but it takes one person to kind of look at a piece and say 'she's nude' to cause a redesign or, I guess, 'censoring'.
Honestly, I feel if you add more clothes to her, it's just making the over sexualizing worse, but maybe that's just me.
In the end, she's a cool character, and I don't mind either way (though, yes, I will lean more towards the original) so long as they don't work on tarnishing her image like last time they attempted after issue 50. But, what is done is done, I suppose. Those issues added/subtracted a LOT of unnecessary changes. There was a part in the comic of the Knuckles archive where they gave a random side character that you only hear of once a pipe in his hands...and yet subtracted blood that splattered on a doctor's cheek during surgery. So blood/nudity = gotta go, but smoking is A-OK to keep in, folks!
All and all, great piece and thought provoking. Really love the look of the (what was that...gold or water? I couldn't figure that out in the issue), and it is always great to see Sally in her older design.

I can't find but the issue that starts that 'trilogy' in my disorganized collection of Knuckles/Sonic comics, but if I were to guess now, Knuckles issue 15 where Charmy's friend is in surgery. The Knuckles' archive that has the scene is Knuckles archive #3, so you see the doctor 'flinch' for no reason when he cuts open Mello. (13 is the one that starts that story.)

Good call! The first page of Knuckles #15 does depict some 'blood' - although I can hardly call it that when it's coloured purple. More amazing still is that the surgeon promptly throws up after the operation. This guy has no sense of professionalism!

Haha, I guess I read the comics too much. Doesn't help that I have them not far from my desk, so I can flip through. They are just out of order, sadly, so it's harder to find certain numbers, but I remember cover art.
Guess we should say 'bee blood', if even that as bees don't have purple blood-ish substances inside of them. So yeaaah, if you see it in the archives, he looks like he's oddly wincing. LOL~! Not sure if I want that surgeon on the top of my list of guys to operate on me if blood and guts makes him squeamish.
