Description
Okay, this news is over two years old, but I only found out about it recently. Back in October 1999, Archie published Sonic Super Special #11, featuring the short story "Ascension" in which Sally undresses and merges with the Source of All to uncover her destiny like her father before her. When this story was reprinted in May 2012 in Sonic Select #5, Archie had taken a firmer stance on Sally's nudity and edited the pages so that she's wearing her vest. In fact, the vest is still coloured blue in the sepia panels as if to say, "Yes! She's got her vest on, readers!"I discovered this by accident when I came across Sonic Select #5 in a comic shop and immediately spotted the change. My initial reaction was incredulous. Was this really necessary? It's not as if the vest really covers up Sally, but for some reason Archie believes this small item of clothing makes the comic more kid-friendly. I guess you could say this was a precursor to Sally's more conservative redesign after "Worlds Collide". So what do you think? Do you agree that the edit was for the best, or do you prefer the uncut version of "Ascension"? You can see a collage of the changes below.
Also, I've decided to share the inked version in case anyone wants to get some colouring practice with this. Feel free to have a go!
(I wonder if drawing Elias means I'll be sued...)

If fur means characters aren't naked, does furry porn not exist?

On the opposite side, if they are naked, does that mean we've been looking at porn since we were kids?

I think it's ridiculous that they would make such a big deal about it. She's a freaking animal for crying out loud! It isn't showing anything! Why does it matter? Majority of the dudes are like that!
I mean, I kinda understand with how her design is here, with her being more humanoid, but if they went with her GOOD, actual animal design like in 230, then there's no execuse.

So in the remake of the comic Archie Comics make her jacket to be wet... allthough it doesn't make sence, cuz the jacket didn't make that much of a difference.

You watch too much anime. He's giving her clothes to put BACK ON. Not to mention, she's covered in fur anyway, there's nothing to look at, hence the JOKE here in the picture drawn.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the only anime I've ever watched was Death Note. And I'm old enough to comprehend this joke and even laugh a little bit. My comment was also a joke. A silly joke, indeed, I often post shitty comments and regret it. If I did hurt somebody's feelings, then I apologize. There's too much quarrel on the Internet, so why don't we stop this one?

It wasn't a tangent (defined as moving from one subject to another), but a brief accusation. It had plenty to do with what he was doing, which he admited to, which was making a dumb comment. If he doesn't want to continue talking, he can simply.... ummm.... stop talking?
For a moment I thought that there was a smidgeon of sense in you, but of course even you lack objective thought. I bet you'd shit a brick over anyone actually supporting the censorship, which probably goes to show why there isn't anyone commenting in favor of it. Sorry bro, I support freedom of speech, and anyone who can't deal with that can kindly fuck off. Besides, this wasn't something that prompted a response from you anyway since replying to others doesn't show up in your inbox - you butted in. Thanks for proving to be a hypocrite - that journal about people being mindlessly self indulgent/whoring for attention isn't anything different from allowing only positive comments to grace your deviations. Words only ever hurt someone who allowed them to, and no one ever died from a verbal disagreement.
The topic is closed when I close it. And I'll do that for you, since little words hurt you for some reason. It's not like I can't still see your artwork anyway You may think yourself hardcore for coming off blunt with your watchers, but I'm still the bigger asshole. Ta!

You won't have to deal with him anymore, because Ken Penders created him for the comics and since the lawsuit demanded that all Ken Penders' characters get the axe, there you go then.

Oh my god, I didn't know this. this is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard
Sonic is naked all the time no one says a word. Sally is naked, suddenly everyone loses their minds!!
With or without the backstory, this picture is well done and funny XD
BTW, though I'm aware of Archie's feelings on fan art, I feel you're less likely to get in trouble for drawing Elias, and more likely to get in trouble for using actual scans of the comic for the background

Nice work!
To answer the question: I don't care that they clothed her because the open jacket doesn't really cover anything up anyway. Maybe they were trying to do it with the intention you described, but to be honest it wasn't very effective.
I find it strange and ironic that SEGA and Archie are so strict on covering up "nudity" of all of their female characters, yet are completely fine with the male characters not wearing any pants even though their junk would actually be more obvious.
Personally, I like the cool clothing and outfits that the female characters usually get. I wish they would also cover the male characters with pants. It would be fair and would make more sense, plus it would eliminate this self-contradicting take on nudity.
Not sure if you noticed, but here Sally is portrayed by Archie with human-like feet while Nicole always has the cartoon 3-toe paw feet in the same comic (which SEGA now officially supports on their Sonic characters by the way). "Contradicting as usual I see! I'm demoting you!"

SEGA supports 3-toed feet now? Where's this info so I can see?
Up until recently, at least, SEGA's version of the characters had toeless "flipper" feet, as seen on things like the official character artwork for Big the Cat and Tikal the Echidna, as well as beach art of Tails and Amy. Which, you know, I've never liked. I much prefer Sally's human-style feet, and apply that to everyone in my own headcanon.

It was a recent addition made after Sonic Generations, which was the last place the old blob foot style was seen.
One place the new cartoon 3-toe style can be seen is All Stars Racing Transformed, on all of the Sonic characters.
If you're an Archie Sonic fan, Archie had already been doing this for years with Nicole.

ChronosCat In reply to MoonGoneDark [2015-09-09 18:40:50 +0000 UTC]
And yet Archie gave Muttski flipper feet (or he wears socks the same color as his fur with sandals), and Nicole now wears shoes...
Hopefully the 3-toed style will make a return to the comic; I've never liked the flipper-style (except on characters that are supposed to be sea creatures, anyway).

I haven't read the Archie comics since the issue where Sonic got back from space (so right before the infamous slap, I guess? I can't remember).
But thanks for reference. I'll have to go look that up. I much prefer any concept with toes over the flipper feet.

No problem!
I personally like the cartoon animalistic-looking design that's now official. Unlike the hands, the feet are not crucial for interaction and communication, so to me it works better with the rest of the cartoon character style if they are simplified but still look natural (i.e. not a sock blob thing). Because of this, I find accurately-shaped human feet on an animal-type character with a simple cartoon style everywhere else looks freaky and makes them stand out too much. Just my opinion.

Well, Sally originally had petite feet (so did Nicole in her first appearance), which was maintained by artists like Pat Spaz, Art Mawhinney and J. Axer. It was only when Tracy Yardley showed up that Sally's feet swelled to gigantic proportions . For the record, I typically use J. Axer's artwork as reference for Sally.

I actually preferred it when the Mobians had more realistic proportions. Like they were actually living creatures and not cartoons. Paz Spaz Sally will always be my favorite design, even if Tracy Yardley and Evan Stanly are great artists.
Also, hilarious as ever Glitcher! Keep up the good work!

Haha I always found it funny when people said 'SHE'S NAKED!' -- it's like dude, she has fur All animals have it... Technically not naked unless your mind is thinking naked things :I
EDIT: She was a chipmunk, right? O_o or a woodland animal of some kind, if I remember right. I just remember a friend pointing out 'she's naked' and I said "Isn't she an animal? She has fur."
Then again, people complained about Porky Pig being naked, so the solution was 'GIVE HIM A COAT!' never mind he's not wearing any pants lol

Agreed. What? Are we going to complain about certain Muppets (Kermit the Frog, Big Bird, many monsters [Grover, Telly, Elmo, pre-tutu Zoe, etc.], Baby Bear, etc.) being without clothes or being without pants (the majority of non-human Muppets, including the Fraggles [ www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOqg3F… ], whose ecosystem mirrors our own)? It's ridiculous.

People will argue for the sake of arguing.
No one said a word about Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck wearing nothing but gloves, however they got up in arms about Porky Pig being naked lol... it's silly but, sometimes people are weird.
I could see the logic behind if this character was over sexualized with human genitalia, but she's an animal... anthropomorphic at best really. Not to mention a cartoon, haha! The cartoons I grew up with were just these, anthro animal characters and while they did wear clothes, they didn't wear a ton of them all the time because the creators likely assumed that kids new animals didn't need to wear clothes.
The moment anyone bitches about Kermit not wearing clothes is the moment humanity needs to calm down about it's generalization of sexual visuals. He's a frog, and truth be told the only way his mouth moves is with a hand shoved up his backside. That part is a bit more disturbing to think about than the fact a frog isn't wearing clothes.

Incidentally, on Tiny Toons, Fifi Le Flume, the amorous tween skunkette was sans clothes most of the time (she was only one of the three Toonettes [the other two being Babs Bunny & and Shirley the Loon] to be basically "naked") and, like Sally, was voiced by Kath Soucie. Furthermore, given her status as pupil to Pepe Le Pew, she was purposely made to chase around boys and men the same way Pepe chased Penelope (Fifi was even in an inter-species relationship with Hampton J. Pig in the prom episode as well as the holiday specials). Seriously, people are getting their undies in a knot over nothing.
