Description
(Props to anyone who can guess the title reference. I'll know if you used Google search because you got the answer right.)openCanvas 6 is out today, people! And to celebrate its release, I made this fantasy illustration a couple months ago as a testament to what I can paint with it. The girl in the corner is openCanvas' mascot oC-tan, and you can also see Portalgraphics' mascots Potako and Eyebrows Rabbit on the right edge. Most of the illustrations featured are my own, and this is a rare case of me painting a pic with no outlines whatsoever. I want to give a shoutout to Japanese artists Dome and So for their inspiration.
Some of you may be wondering, "Glitch, why the heck did you make a pic of a painting program of all things?!" Well, the original idea came from Sonic fan artist, Orin. Waaaay back in 2003, she posted a pic on teamArtail demonstrating her love for deviantArt. Back then, I thought it was funny that someone would make fan art of their favourite website, so I wanted to channel her enthusiasm by dedicating this piece to my favourite painting program. It's been instrumental in my artistic development for the past six years, and all my painting playbacks you see in my submission descriptions were made with it.
For existing openCanvas users, you might want to check out some of the new features, including:
- Brush scattering - This works similar to the scattering function in Photoshop. Ideal for painting with texture brushes without creating repeating patterns. Textures can also follow the direction of the stroke. (The setting for this is really obscure. You need to right-click a brush and select "Edit Brush". It should be in the "Stroke Option" tab.)
- Layer masks - A long overdue addition to openCanvas. Great for creating non-destructive edits to layers.
- Stroke interpolation - This actually exists in the previous version, but it was really slow and awkward to use. Fortunately, it's been improved immensely and now acts like SAI's brush stabilizer.
- Native 64-bit support - Says it all, really.
So that covers it! If you haven't tried out openCanvas yet, now's your chance to download the latest version . Be sure to scroll down to check the change log for more information on new features (including a few things that have sadly been removed).
Β Also, this painting is available for print! If you like what you see, you can order a copy now! =========>>>>>>

Oh my goodness, this is the most inspiring picture I've seen. It's just so beautifully well done and- j-just no words can describe it! The moment you just give the slightest look, you HAVE to blink one or two times to realize what you have clicked on! Truly, Canvas can do Miracles!
The first time I stared at this wondrous creation, I quickly began to examine the whole painting for what it is, first the explosion of nature and reality, then the powerful creator that made all this happened with that large paint brush. I honestly think that anyone who didn't make this a Daily Deviation is quite foolish! I can't give any recommendations, being how pretty it is! I hope to see many others like this! Please, give more!

Awww, bless. This was quite a complicated piece to make and it's rewarding to see it so well appreciated. Thank you for your kind words, Heart416. I hope to paint other 'miracles' for years to come.

Powerful! I love how you mixed all kind of things and the colors are stunning; so ''digital''. The poses of the animals look natural, the bubbles are well shaded and it was good you added light effects from the ''ball'' to oC-tan In that way she stands out more and I like she's standing on water.

Dang Glitch... I'd give a critique, seeing as no one else has, but I really don't feel qualified. Β There's so much going on that I've been staring at it and I still don't think I've noticed most of the details! Β You no doubt have a 'full-size' version somewhere (I can't believe this IS the full-size) and I'd love to see it! Β I REALLY like the animals. Most notably the tiger and the deer.Β
The whole thing is kinda mesmerizing.

You don't need to be a dab hand at art to have an eye for it. For once, I'm not offering the full-res version for download because this painting is being sold for print.

About 25 years, I'd wager. I've taken several art courses, some good, some bad, but true progress comes from your own initiative.

That's a long time!
What kind of art courses did you take anyway?
I want to be about as good as you, but sadly I don't have that much experience. I've been to art class like a normal person would have at school, but I only got more interested just about a year ago, I really like to draw sometimes, though most of the learning was through self discipline.Β

Well, let's see. After graduating from high school, I took a gap year in visual arts in Switzerland. At the recommendation of my peers, I majored in bandes-dessinΓ©es (French comics) in Belgium, but the teachers and students were so pathetic that I dropped out in my third year. I still expanded my repertoire by taking night classes in web design, 2D and 3D animation at a nearby school.
So I'm not exactly a role model for artistic education. If I were you, I'd do some solid research on the background of art schools before making the same mistake I did. You're still on the right path if you're taking the time to teach yourself. You're still young, so I recommend getting an early lead on learning painting software. Pick up a copy of Scott Kelby's Photoshop Down & Dirty Tricks to get you started. It's a 'cook book' of cool effects that taught me the ropes.

You misunderstand. I was educated in Switzerland to begin with. My family moved there from Kuwait after the Gulf War, so I learned French as part of my upbringing. Belgium is nearby and the Eastern half speaks French, so the language barrier wasn't a problem. I decided to return home to the UK after poor prospects abroad. Still prefer to live in the States, but that's not going to happen any time soon. *sigh*
