Description
So, it was recently my 8th Deviantart anniversary...and I thought what better way to celebrate than with another Draw This Again challenge? This marks the third redraw of this particular image (or rather theme, as they all came out quite differently despite best intentions lol).
This one felt especially special. Though my progress feels slow and there are areas I know I still need to work hard to better, I can't help but feel proud of the outcome and reflect on how much I've grown as both and artist and a person since the first version of this was drawn.
Here's to another 8 years of making terrible (but fun) art!

nuuuuu you're goin' more to the lighter side, Samtabby~~ I mean, it's still "night" but lacks the gothic-ness...
there's certainly improvements, the lineart and the colouring is on the awesome scale!^^
I mean, the colour does see what you've studied all these years; you can blend the colours to be visual and see-able to the eye, great blending I'd say~!^^
But still, if you juz put those darker colours back...

Maybe a lil. I still like dark things. I think a lot of the shift in my style and color choices are because of doing conventions, not that my old style wouldn't sell, but because of production issues. I print all of my merch on my own because it's cheaper than going to a shop and unfortunately my printer is not great for super dark works. I mean it has really nice blacks, but too dark of a color palette prints muddy and the details are too hard to see. So I started being more cautious of my color choices and backgrounds (wasting supplies is a no go). I think at this point it's just sort of become a habit. I worked so many months on my merch, for a long time that was all I was drawing. I'm grateful for it though, because you know prior to them I was barely drawing at all. Now I draw almost every day. Honestly I'm okay with the trade off.
Thank you. ^_^
Blending and coloring are my favorite part. So satisfying.~ That probably has a lot to do with it too. Colors are just fun to use.
Oh I'm sure they will when I go back to working on personal projects. I have two art trades left (one will be done later today) and I was planning to do some updated drawings of some of my characters after.
Also, hello again.~ I haven't seen you on DA in a while (though, I've only really been active again here recently, so what do I know ).

Hmmm...when printing, do you shift the colour from RGB, to CMYK?
Printing things in RGB is gonna make the colour smudged/muddy, Samtabby~~ CMYK colours are great for printing, especially glossy papers; so have a look in your setting. Adobe always have default RGB (they even have "Adobe RGB"
) but yep, check on that.
CMYK is gonna cost you more MB though...
Wuuu~~~ you definitely need to draw those things you're drawing everyday, Samtabby~!!!!^^

I've tried both methods, with near equal results (as far as the dark colors are concerned anyway). I know traditionally it's the preferred format for printing (which is why I've experimented with it). It's just probably the limitations of my equipment (my printer is designed for printing photos at home, not art prints-- it doesn't even have separate color cartridges
). I wanna eventually upgrade it (or start outsourcing the printing) but for now I'm working with what I got.
Actually, most of the time, with the exception of super dark prints, I don't have issues with muddy colors or replicating colors. I can get very nice results (after learning the limitations and working around them ofc, but again, I'm pretty sure it's because of the printer).
Thanks for the advice.~
Yes! I'm very excited to get started on them. ...I might have accepted more art trades since this comment though.
I have three left. But I've closed trades, so once those are done, I will definitely be posting some OC art.

... guess the dark-colours juz work that way, then...
have you tried photo paper on CMYK?
Get Epson or Brother printers in the future, Samtabby. NEVER HP; and Canon can be like...the second option
but yeah, Brother, or Epson, is the way to go.
yay for of your OC-artworks then~!^^

Yeah.
I use photo paper for my prints, and sometimes cardstock (for like the inktober/greyscale works. They look nicer on it than photo paper, and ppl like the more traditional feel for traditional art).
Okay, I'll remember that when I do finally upgrade (though while researching, outsourcing is beginning to look more appealing, even if there is an upfront cost).
YESSSS. You've already seen the new Willow ref. ^^ Today I'm going to start working on an Adelrik ref (he's never actually had one! ). And my goal is to have new refs for Heidi, Asilin, and Chris by the semester's start (the 22nd). Once I finish the ref sheets, I'll (hopefully) start posting more art of the characters together. ^^ I wanna establish a base for their design (solidify them), to avoid the inconsistency issues I've had n the past.

I see~~~ >3 well, guess it all lies in the printer now~~
You know what specific papers to get for printing alright, Samtabby~~
hmmm... you can actually juz have a graphic-design shop print that, if you're planning on printing a bulk. I think the cost would be about the same ,but they'd know (be sure to get a good shop though) the schematics on those. (and prepare your artworks in CMYK)
that all sounds like a plan, Samtabby~!!!^^ I'd approve much of that~^^
and nuuuu by 22nd you'd be away again and wouldn't be replying as much again, Samtabby~~
but yep, make all those reference sheets as your project, okay~~!
^^
