Description Dude, aren't you a bit too big to be bathing with toys?

=========================

From technical standpoint this is an experimental pic. Here I played with the ways to render water surface, as opposed to not paying attention to it at all (as in "Uncomfortable "), or adding water effects in postwork (as in "Ambush ").

The result was not too satisfying. Halfway through the final render pass I realized that I calculated the ripple sizes wrong and they are too shallow...

Well, practice makes perfect, and I hope I will do better next time I delve into rendering liquids.

Rendered in D|S with M4, K4 and D3 as characters.

And the rubber ducky named Henry.

Water looks good actually.

I would suggest what you already know, make the ripples bigger. Maybe even have a few shallow ripples coming from the duck as it bobs up and down. The arm/hand that is holding up the boat would probably throw in a few more ripples as well too. (Most should be coming from his chest thought, as that is the most surface being disrupted.)

Water is a very difficult thing to draw, no less replicate digitally. For a first effect at trying to focus on it, great job. Keep practicing with it and you will get the hang of it. Still a very nice piece. I don't know what program you use, but if you used Photoshop, and did the water on different layers, then you should be able to go back in and rework some of this if you wished.

Great job. Seems like a fun time to be a small. I do hope that the big person is wearing swim wear while in there...

Thank you for the comment and the advice! I rendered the scene in Daz Studio, then added a couple of finishing touches in Photoshop, although I did not touch the water - it was rendered "as is".

Maybe water effects would be easier if done in photoshop? Do a ripple effect, warp it into a circle maybe? I'm sure you will figure it out in time. You've done a great job so far anyway.

Glkthread In reply to Tesunie [2010-07-27 23:58:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it might be easier that way. I did some water in Photoshop for a previous render - using a displacement map - it was fun

Tesunie In reply to Glkthread [2010-07-28 00:40:55 +0000 UTC]

I've never used a displacement map... Never even heard of it till right now too. Wonder what it does? (I've used the program for years and I'm still learning new things I can do with it.) Whatever it is, it sounds like fun.

There is a special filter in Photoshop (Filters>Distort>Displace) that uses a pre-configured displacement map to create various distortion effects. You create the "ripple effect" image first (I used this tutorial: [link] ), then apply it to your image or a portion of it to create water surface.

I used this to create a small and subtle reflection effect in this render: [link]

I usually don't comment on pics, in fact this is my first comment on Devinantart. This is a very well done pic, and from someone who dosent use computer programs such as yours, I don't see anything wrong with the ripples.

Looks like fun for them all. The fellow in the boat needs to be aware of underwater obstructions and the turbulence caused by sudden gas leaks!

Underwater cave exploration is dangerous. There's a lot of it done here in Florida! Well... real caves and scuba divers... still dangerous.

Another instant classic. But maybe next time
you should try an outdoor scene, that way you only concentrate on sea and sky (and tinies ). Anyway, still great.

Later.

Yeah, I have a Gulliver-inspired outdoor scene in plans that might feature the sea and plenty of littles
