Description The one good thing that has ever come out of censorship laws.
In fact I consider it perfectly reasonable for fundies to stop waiting for Jesus to show up, because the birth of an awsumfest like Probotector out of censorship is on level with splitting oceans and shit like that. The big guy upstairs won't be able to pull another similar stunt for the next century or two.

...
Perspective is such a bitch. :[

The (only) best thing to come out of censorship law. The games became even more awesome with robots as the main characters.

This is great! I always thought Probotector was way cooler than Contra.

You rock. Please draw more Probotector. I'm also glad we had robots instead of stalone/schwarzenegger knockoffs.

I can totally agree that perspective can be an absolute nightmare even for a pro-artist!!!

This has surprising atmosphere; very well done

Probotector was truly the most magnificent thing that came out of censorship laws, I agree.

And all we got Stateside were Arnold/Sylvester lookalikes.

I like the whole 'last known surveillance footage' aspect, although the composition is a bit too similarly lit, yanno? All that shaaarp contrast makes the eye veer off. Color accent lighting might have helped.

Rabbit ears and all.
Needs more mutant babies...

I do see more of the Patlabor than Armored Core in the designs. But looking at the box art, I see it there too. Of course, that could be the old head wounds talking, too.

The similarities are pretty striking. Then again, Patlabor was kicked off in 88, Probotector got out one year prior. Does it mean anything? I don't know.
The Armored Core -influence is pretty obscure here, mainly because I bloomed and shaded and filtered the crap out of everything. But, it's not just directly ripping off the designs, more of incorporating the overall style. The seams on the plating, the feel of the sensors, motion of the joints, all the smaller stuff than the entire mech. I keep doing my own little Kawamori-tributes almost automatically, and here I even consciously tried not to do it which led to rather simplistic designs. Which is why I drowned everything out with filter effects.

So what exactly was Probotector? I don't remember ever seeing it to ever try playing it. Then again, I never had enough to ever buy a lot of NES games back in the late 80s so it's not surprising either I never saw it.

It's Contra.
Something about it didn't agree with Germany's laws, so the European version was changed from dudes shooting commies into mechs mowing down a screaming alien swarm.
Which is awesome.

Ya know, that explains why they looked so blocky.

I see influences of Patlabor, FMP Arm Slaves and Armoured Core. All fantastic if you ask me. I could be wrong though. I’m just stating what I see.

Perspective is a bitch but you’ve done it nicely, altogether a fantastic piece.

I was half-assedly glancing for reference at the Probotector box art, but thanks to my lack of commitment to faithfully replicate the machines, Armored Core might be the biggest contributor here. Like in pretty much every mech I've drawn.
