Part of Series "51 Moments Gone, That Keep Me Returning"
Painted 2021-22 for a Grant, Library Arts Center, Newport NH
Erosion from hikers.
"Stay on the trail, or stay home" is the saying.
The White Mountains, and I imagine all mountains, didn't evolve to handle human's feet in sneakers and boots. Our singular footprint harms vegetation that holds the soil in place. Now, multiply that by the 6 MILLION people who visit the WMNF and hike up many of the trails. It's critical hikers stay ON the trail, and whenever possible step on ROCKS and roots in the trail. You must NOT walk the side of the trail to avoid mud and puddles, or else you create this problem. If you can't handle dirt, and wet feet, stay on the pavement. PLEASE. Trail maintenance is expensive, and covid complicated the effort. It takes many volunteers to manage the trails. There's hundreds of miles to tend, and getting tools and resources to the problem areas is arduous. Please be mindful. This trail looked nothing like this 6 years prior when I first hiked Isolation.
