Description
Because the tutorial that I used to start making these actually seems to have vanished off the face of the internet.Freezer paper is awesome - I can't believe I never heard about it until now. You can use the iron-on stencil for fabric paint instead if that's your bowl of fish... I just thought the bleach idea was neat as a cheap sort of thing.
Also.
You TOTALLY want to do this in a well-ventilated area. I had all my windows cracked open and I was still high as a kite by the time those shirts were done.
fun though.

lol
Yeah mine kept coming out all splattery, instead of an even tone - maybe I bought a crappy spray bottle.
What got messed up?

I don't think it's that bad that yours became splattery.. it kind of gives it some charakter
I couldn geht waxpaper and used normal paper. I tried to seal it with lacquer but ... ... were the paper was is now coloured like rust, the motive is evenly white.
I added some splatters over the whole shirt.
Unfortunately my sisters are all out. I have to wait until they come back (I totaly suck at taking pictures of me myself -.-; )

Very nice.
If you're into shirt making, you might want to invest in a silkscreen and some ink - that way, you can do colour designs / designs on light shirts.

GlowingMember In reply to Sir-Ichi [2009-07-02 14:18:47 +0000 UTC]
I've found a few cheapskate ways for using ink on shirts - freezer paper seems to work just as well as a stencil for paint instead of bleach.
There's also this sort of thing , which I haven't tried yet and can't vouch for, but looks interesting.
Because I'm cheap. XD

Hmm, interesting.
Yee, I'm cheap too, but I'm lucky enough to have a friend who isn't. She bought herself a silkscreen and lets me use it from time to time.

gotta figure out where i got that stencil sheet the first time around.
on another note
I wonder if I should make a print version of this tut for selling (cheap) at cons. It sounds like something people will be interested in (judging by the fav's and collections, ho-lee).
wish i had the original link to the tutorial I found though, so I could credit this guy with the discovery.
I shake my fist at you, stencil revolution, and your forum-moving!

A note about repositionable adhesive
I am so blonde I sprayed the shirt with it and then stuck the stencil on. Works great, you can move the stencil around and it will still stick.
Problem.
What I should have done is spray the STENCIL and then stuck it to the shirt... as the layer of adhesive on the shirt blocked the bleach from getting to the fabric.
Duh me.
Will try again and post results!

Weird.
I just grabbed the first jug of Javex that I saw on the shelf at the store, appears to have worked fine.
I guess it's a hit-and-miss with some brands.

Also trying out some more permanent stencils and repositionable adhesive. We'll see how that pans out.

Very nicely instructive. I'm looking into doing some sort of apparel, so I just might have to try this out. Also, I like the big fat drops and whatnot; it gives a nice texture to the whole design.
Question to you:
Do you wash the shirt after you're done, or do you just let it dry, and then begin to wear it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
GlowingMember In reply to bustermaximus [2009-04-04 15:51:25 +0000 UTC]
The place I got the idea from says you should always run these through the dryer before anything else.
I don't see the harm in wearing it right away but I do believe it's a good idea to stick it in the dryer *before* washing it, just to be extra sure that all the bleach is dried out first.
Thanks for the feedback
