The Beginning

"I'm sorry you had to grow up on your own but, I just didn't think I needed to or could, for that matter, take care of you."

Tum's expression was flat and serious. He was accompanied by a strange looking Nyulop that sprouted Queen's Crown flowers on their horns and tail, and a familiar brown companion that Tum had seen in a snowstorm one day. He could only assume that the two were united as a result of him participating in The Grand Giver's blessing of the town tree. He thought that the two might have been looking for him to have him take care of them, so he invited the two to his house room so he could talk while he packed, but--

"Whether or not you had a home was the Grand Giver's responsibility, not mine. Technically I wasn't the one to bless you or whatever you might call it-- I just helped in the process."

Aiz and the young varkery were by eachother's side and were looking through the room delicately. At a glance, it seemed as if they were failing to listen to the draken's explanation and were sight-seeing over what a "house room" looked like.

"... Are you even listening?" Tum asked, a bit miffed by the Nyulop's behavior.

"I think you're misunderstanding me a bit. I'm not mad or anything, but I just wanted to um..." Aiz made her best attempt at a smile.
"...See who you were for myself. And now that I have, I think things are starting to make more sense for me."

"So you don't want anything to do with me?" Tum's face brightened at the thought, but the moment was short-lived.

Aiz shook her head, still surveying minute parts of the autumn house room. "Mister Tum, I think something is wrong with you. And I want to help."

He scoffed, trying to dismiss Aiz's claim with a tough exterior and fake bravado. "I'm not sure if that's something you should say to someone you've just met-- For all you know and need to care about, I'm doing just fine. I'm even getting ready to take the Great Rite."

"Your side of this room is a mess. Filled with items and gadgets you've seemed to never touch." Aiz gestured to a large drakesprite plush, sitting in a corner of the room filled with dust. She grazed over derelict plant pots. "You have plants all around here but they seem dull and unkempt."

Tum snorted. "Didn't know you wanted to be my mother."

"Your mother would have taught you to be better than this, I think. You wouldn't be like this. You'd at least have a shoulder to le--"

Tum's face contorted into manic anger as he heard the nyulop go on about mothers. He didn't have parental figures, as far as he knew. He did the best he could at the time in the town to try and fit in and adjust. He's been doing all that he could to be a decent guy ever since last year's Starsail Festival! Tum had it with this Nyulop, getting on his case for no plausible reason! He turned out of his seat, stood up angrily, and shouted, "AND WHAT?? SO WHAT IF I DIDN'T GROW UP WITH A MOM, OR A DAD FOR THAT MATTER? YOU OF ALL PEOPLE WOULDN'T--"

Aiz reeled back from the green draken, even though she had remained calm throughout their conversation previously. The small Varkery that was trailing by Aiz's side went wide-eyed and growled defensively, feeling threatened.

It took a few seconds for the realization to set in that Tum lost it, after seeing the expressions on his guests' faces. He didn't mean to act rude like that, it wasn't like him. He just...

Tears had started to roll down the side of his face. "That just... Doesn't give you the excuse to make fun of me. I'm trying, okay..." He whined, his voice cracking into sniffles and cries.

A clawed hand reached out over Tum's shoulder.

"We can try together."

They finally meet again.
I've really enjoyed reading Tum's story so far. Perhaps Aiz can help him with his guilt.
Your writing is very lovely. You did a fantastic job with it!
