Russel took Spencer home, letting him pack a couple of bags of belongings. There were a few toys and a hand-sewn quilt from his mother, but most of the things Spencer decided to bring were books. Russel raised a brow when Spencer put stacks of books on the science of stars and psychology into his bags, and looked like he was going to stop him when he stuffed a large tome on killers of the past into his duffel bag. Instead, all he asked was, "Are you sure you want to bring that one?"

Spencer just returned his gaze, eyebrows lifted and mouth set in a frown. "Yes, I'm positive."

When he was done packing, Russel carried his bags for him, since they were too heavy for Spencer. He felt a little guilty for asking the officer to help after he'd done so much already, but the thought quickly vanished when he had to skirt around the large red stain on the floor as they left. It seemed like Russel had gotten someone to try to clean up, but bloodstains were notoriously difficult to remove. It shook Spencer to see, and his thoughts were full with trying to forget it was there.

He followed Russel through the town, and despite trying to absorb himself in his thoughts, he couldn't help but notice the familiar scenery in such an unfamiliar light. After being in Dr. F's office all night and packing all morning, it was around midday in town, and wyngrew were going to and from places with their own business in mind. Some of them said hello to the town's sheriff as he passed, and he always declined conversations with, "Sorry folks, I've got somewhere to be unless you've got a crime to report," or a variant of it.

Spencer was used to walking through town. He went this way to the Nook, or a slightly different path to the library, almost every day. He walked on his own most of the time, but he didn't really think going with Russel was why he felt so strange.

It was like he was viewing the town through a watery gray filter. Everyone else was still cheerful, and the sun shone brightly overhead, but the colors and sounds were muted for Spencer. If he was honest, he was getting a little disoriented, and it was all he could do to make sure he stayed behind Russel. Streets that used to be so easy to navigate were now an unfamiliar maze, and Spencer's brain turned on autopilot for what was perhaps the first time in his life. Wynsiph was his home, and he knew the streets like the back of his hand. He had no idea where this confusing and hellish landscape was that he was in now, but Russel's presence was his only solace.

He barely registered it when they made it to the Nook, but he blinked up at Alma when she opened the door. "Oh, you poor dear," she hummed at him, taking one of his bags from Russel. "Alright, let's get you to your room. I wasn't able to fit you in a room by yourself, since there was a population boom not too long ago, but I think you'll be fine with these roommates. I know they're all nice, quiet kids."

She reached for his other bag, but Russel shook his head. "Nah. I'll come in with him, see him off, make sure he's alright."

Spencer's brain whirred as it processed the information Alma had given, letting her lead the way to his new room. Russel was behind him now, taking up the rear of the procession and making sure no other wynglings bumped into him. Finally, after what seemed like ages walking through halls Spencer didn't recognize, Alma put down Spencer's bag in front of a door.

"Alright, Spencer, this is your new room, dear. I've already told your new roommates to expect you." She glanced up at Russel, taking Spencer's other bag from him and setting it on the floor by the first. "I think you should say goodbye to Russel now. I'm sure he's busy, being town sheriff and all."

"Thank you, Mister Russel." Spencer turned to Russel immediately, looking up at him with an incredibly serious gaze that caught the quad off-guard. "I mean it, from the bottom of my heart. I respect what you do immensely, and I appreciate your kindness throughout this difficult night."

"It's alright," Russel chuckled, half-smiling and furrowing his brows. "It's my job. And just Russel will do fine. But hey... if you ever need to talk to somebody, or just wanna get away from all these other loud kids running around, feel free to stop by the my office. Here." He produced a card from somewhere (perhaps a hidden pocket in his handkerchief?) and handed it to Spencer, who tucked it into one of his bags after glancing at it. "It's got the address of my office on it. I know you probably know where it is already, but just in case."

"Thank you, Russel," Spencer said again, just as sincere as the first time. He would have to take him up on that offer sometime, since he enjoyed the quad's presence as comforting as it was. Then he turned around, took a deep breath, and reached up to open the door to his new room.

He wasn't entirely surprised when his three new roommates looked up from what they were doing immediately, each of them giving him an accommodating smile. "Welcome to your room!" they all exclaimed, coming towards him.

Spencer waved at each of them, introducing himself and getting to know their names, memorizing the things they said to him for later use. He could feel Alma and Russel still watching until Russel left, and Alma broke up the welcome party to "Let Spencer have some space and settle in, he's had a long day."

It wasn't until Alma coaxed him into bed that Spencer realized he hadn't slept till the previous morning. As he settled down for some much-needed rest, a last little thought crossed his mind. I wonder if Dipper is still here or if he's been adopted yet. I should try to find him tomorrow.

Then he drifted into a dark, dreamless sleep.

Alriiight! This arc is over for Spencer, but coming up next is how he gets settled into the Nook. It's gonna be a lot different than living with his mom.

+ hair tuft (it looks a little too big but I'm gonna play around with it in the next few drawings and see what looks best on him)
