It had been a week and a half since Fern had met Iris at the bathhouse, and tonight, it was time. The new moon would rise, his family would sleep to prepare for another day of work on the farm, and Fern would slip away under the cover of night. Over that week and a half, he'd been squirreling away his belongings in a bag hidden under some hay in the barn, or at least what few he wanted to take with him. He was ready, more than ready, for his departure.

During their last meal together, which no one else knew would be their last, Fern couldn't help but think about how relieved he would be to get away from this. So much of the time, his family liked to act like everything was just fine, but to Fern, it wasn't.

Once he left here and began to work for Iris, he could find answers. He could try to discover more about himself outside of this little home and their little farm. He would be able to do something else for a change.

He helped his not-mother wash up the dishes after the meal, and he went to bed after his siblings were already there. He waited until the sounds of their breathing evened out. Then he got up and quietly slipped out of the house, not glancing back for even a moment.
