Description
Not sure why a wasp would like to be like a ant, interesting patterns in head anyway.f/22 | iso200 | 1/200s
This one with Canon 100mm macro, it was adjusted in 1:3 but Raynox MSN-202 (28 diopetr) in front of, 7mm frame in the 4752 x 3168 resolution.

Not sure if you've heard this before, but the two looking alike makes sense because ants are flightless wasps. A family of wasps developed an colonial underground style of living and therefore lost their wings, though they resurface in queens and males. ^^

Wasps are the shit! I think they're the most fascinating animals after humans. Cool photo, by the way.

really awesome work!
I was wondering if you get anywhere near any vignetting on the Canon 100mm with the MSN-202 in front? I've been considering getting one for a Tamron 90mm (already have a dcr 250) and my only concern is vignetting.
thanks and keep up the great work!

I do not experienced vignetting at least in the canon T1i, this photo is the original one, no crop, so you can clearly judge how the 202 work in this setup

Excellent image!
What's the magnification and working distance with that combination?

gmazza In reply to dalantech [2009-12-29 18:32:11 +0000 UTC]
The working distance is 25mm the focus of the 100mm macro in 1:3 but Raynox MSN-202 (28 diopter) wich give exact 7.2mm (T1i’s sensor measures 22.3x14.9mm )
So 22.3/7.2 = 3.09
I made a mistake in my initial tech specs 4mm is the image with Canon 100mm focused in 1:1 with the MSN=202 in front of, in this case the working distance is 20mm and the magnification 22.3/4 = 5.57
Which is too near for this insect head (at least the ones in this mag do not resulted in good images)

Well, I guess if it looks like an ant, the ants will think it's an ant and let it come closer than they would let another insect -->result the wasp has an easier time catching the ant. Nothing better than food to inspire mother nature
But really interesting capture again, like you pointed out the patterns on the head are very intriguing and as always you did great making the shiny black contrast with the green background.

Is one atrong possibility, another would be attracting flies, wo looks for ants as an indicative of sugar, and trap them (have seen jumping spiders mimic ant in order to do this). I posted in some internet forums hope a biologist in these forums could help.

Got the useful info from, photomacrography and POTN forums that wasps and ants have a common ancestor and are closely related, this explain the ant pattern in this wasp head.

Yes, in reality tree eyes (one is slight out of DOF in this one) and two compounded lateral to head.
